At just 16, Ahida Sarmai is redefining what it means to dream — and to dare. Living with Down Syndrome, she has refused to let labels define her. Instead, she has carved a luminous path across the world of performing and visual arts — now culminating in her Bollywood debut.

Daughter of Group Captain Amit Sarmai, a decorated Indian Air Force helicopter pilot, Ahida embodies the same spirit of courage and determination that fuels our nation’s sky warriors. A trained classical dancer, actor, photographer, and painter, she has already earned acclaim as Miss India (Down Syndrome) first runners-up and Miss Delhi (Special Category) first runners-up.
Her graceful Bharatanatyam performance at Rashtrapati Bhavan left audiences spellbound, while her vibrant artworks continue to adorn prestigious galleries such as the India Habitat Centre (New Delhi) and the National Centre for the Performing Arts (Mumbai).
Now, with her upcoming Bollywood films ‘Maktoob’ and ‘Bebaquian’, Ahida steps onto the silver screen — not just as an actor, but as a symbol of hope and inclusion. “I dream of acting in Hindi television shows like Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah and Anupama. Acting makes me happy — it makes me feel free,” she says with an infectious smile.
Ahida’s journey mirrors the triumph of other inspiring stars such as Zoya Agarwal, the Air India pilot who commanded an all-women crew over the North Pole, and Rupanshi Kashyap, India’s young inclusion advocate — all women who prove that passion conquers every barrier.
A finalist for the Global People Critic Award for Down Syndrome, Ahida is much more than a rising star — she is a national inspiration, reminding the world that ability shines brightest when nurtured with love, discipline, and belief.
Her story — born in the home of an Air Force officer and carried forward by her own wings — is a celebration of what India stands for: inclusion, courage, and the freedom to dream without limits.
