Sixteen counterfeit Fortune Sunflower oil 15-liter tins worth Rs 4.4 lakh were seized by Naranpura police during raids at a provision store in Naranpura and four persons have been booked on Saturday. The police have got two-day remand, officials said on Sunday.
Based on specific information, a joint team of Naranpura police under DCP Ravindra Patel and FMCG major Adani Wilmar conducted raids at Tirupati Provision Store at Akash Flats, Parishram Tower, Mirambika Road, Ankur, Naranpura on Saturday. The police team was led by PI A G Jadhav and included PSI DK Jadeja, Head Constable Kripal Singh, and Narendrasinh.
“Five counterfeit 15-liter tins of Fortune Sunflower oil were seized from the shop. Eleven more similar counterfeit tins were seized from a loading vehicle after the shop owner asked the supplier to send him more tins. In all, 16 15-litre tins of counterfeit Fortune Sunflower were seized. The team further located the manufacturing unit late night and found 130 empty tins without labels but Adani Wilmar embossed on them,” said a spokesperson of Adani Wilmar.
Several mismatches, including wrong MRP, Batch Code details, Ingredients, fonts, hologram, barcode, and label design were found on the counterfeit tins when compared with the original tins.
The total seizure is estimated at Rs. 4.40 lakh.
An FIR has been registered against shop owner Vikram Chaudhary, a resident of Sarvodayanagar, Ghatlodia. Mahesh Patel and Ajit Patel, both residents of Odhav, Ahmedabad, who had supplied the counterfeit tins, have also been booked along with a co-accused Shailesh Modi, a resident of Nava Vadaj who brought the tins in loading vehicle.
The accused persons have been booked under sections 406, 420, 482, 483, and 114 of the Indian Penal Code, and sections 51 and 63 of the Copyright Act. For Shailesh Modi and Mahesh Patel, the police have been granted remand for 2 days.
The police are on the lookout for one of the two manufacturing unit owners Ajit Patel and are also investigating the source of the labels used on the counterfeit tins.
