AHMEDABAD, MARCH 20
As the threat of coronavirus spreads through India, including Gujarat, social organisations are actively spreading awareness about this illness among the lesser-privileged classes who have very limited access to trustworthy information about the viral infection and its prevention.
Taking steps towards preventing the spread of coronavirus in Ahmedabad, Kaakum Karangal (Protective Hands), a women’s body working for the uplift of women in Khokhra-Amraiwadi area of Ahmedabad on Friday announced that it will distribute 1,000 face masks to people in Hatkeshwar Circle of Ahmedabad, in the presence of its executive body members. The free distribution will commence at 11 am on Saturday and the organisers have obtained the necessary permissuion from the authorities concerned.
Speaking to navjeevanexpress.com, Kakkum Karangal secretary Kalpana Thanikachalam and president Vimala Raja said that for the poor and the lesser informed, coronavirus is still a mysterious illness. “They are unaware of the basic sanitary habits and precautions that can prevent coronavirus infections. For them, a face mask offers the first line of defence, protecting them to some extent from a direct infection. If everyone wears a face mask, the spread of this infection could be arrested. By distributing face masks for free, we are supporting the efforts of both the state government and the Central government in arresting the deadly and pandemic coronavirus. We also convey our gratitude to the healthcare staffers for rising to the occasion,” Vimala Raja said.
Furthermore, the 12th anniversary celebrations of Kaakum Karangal, scheduled to be held on March 29 stands cancelled, they said.
