The Hyderabad Cybercrime police arrested a woman from Ahmedabad in Gujarat on charges of colluding with cyber fraudsters and cheating people on WhatsApp, in the guise of medical help.
The woman identified as Hemali (33) was held from Ahmedabad in Gujarat.
According to the cybercrime police, recently, a man from Golconda in Telangana received a message on WhatsApp with his friend’s picture as the display picture, asking for money. The sender claimed that her family met with an accident and critically injured in the hospital. She urgently needed money for their treatment.
Believing it to be true, he transferred nearly Rs.2 lakh into the bank account number sent by the suspect. After receiving the amount, the person on the other side stopped responding.
The victim who realized he was cheated approached the cybercrime police and lodged a complaint.
Based on technical evidence, the police identified the bank account details to which the money was transferred using which Hemali was traced and arrested from Ahmedabad.
Further investigation revealed that Hemali had lent her bank account details to a fraudster gang, who cheated people posing as Army personnel, to carry out transactions, on a commission basis.
She had converted the money in her account into bitcoin and sent it to the fraudsters.
Cybercrime officials said further investigation is on.
