Bharatiya Tatrakshak marked another significant milestone in its ongoing force modernisation programme with the commissioning of ICGS Akshay, a next-generation Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV), at Goa Shipyard Limited on June 27.
Named “Akshay,” meaning “Indestructible,” the vessel symbolises the enduring spirit, resilience and unwavering commitment of Bharatiya Tatrakshak in safeguarding India’s maritime interests. The induction of the new patrol vessel further strengthens the Service’s resolve to ensure safe, secure and clean seas while protecting the country’s vast maritime domain.
Designed for multi-mission operations, ICGS Akshay is equipped to undertake a broad spectrum of Coast Guard responsibilities, including maritime law enforcement, coastal security, search and rescue, marine environmental protection, and assistance to mariners in distress. Its induction is expected to significantly enhance the operational readiness and response capability of Bharatiya Tatrakshak.
The vessel was commissioned by Parama Sen, Additional Secretary (Personnel), Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance, in the presence of Inspector General Bhisham Sharma, PTM, TM, Commander, Coast Guard Region (West); Inspector General Jyotindra Singh, TM, Deputy Director General (HRD); and senior dignitaries from the Central and State Governments.
Designed and constructed by Goa Shipyard Limited, ICGS Akshay represents another landmark achievement in India’s indigenous shipbuilding journey and reflects the Government’s steadfast commitment to the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
The induction of the vessel not only enhances the operational strength of Bharatiya Tatrakshak but also reinforces India’s growing domestic maritime manufacturing ecosystem and its vision of achieving greater self-reliance in defence production.
