Old age homes were almost unthinkable just a few years ago, as people generally live in joint families in culturally rich Tamil Nadu and the clan structure was meant to help those who fell on hard times.
However, the modern age has caught up with the state and there are numerous homeless people in Tamil Nadu, which has led Akshaya Trust to open this new facility.
Akshaya Trust began the operations of its 5th free old age home at Velappanchavadi, opposite to the Thiruverkadu temple site entrance arch on the Poonamallee High Road.
“This home will provide new life for 120 senior citizens, including 30 bedridden people. With this new home, Akshaya will be supporting 300 needy destitute senior citizens in total,” the Trustees said.
This new home was inaugurated by Chairman of Tamil Nadu Housing board & Vice President of South Indian Film Artists Association Poochi Murugan. CS Gopala Krishnan, CMO & Director of Hyundai Motors India Limited, Sivanka Lankalingam, JMD of Lanson Toyota and Kalaimanai Devayani Rajakumaran, Cine artist were the Guests of Honor.
Akshaya Trust, a non-profit organization, has been providing shelter to destitute senior citizens for more than two decades. The Trust presently provides free home to 180 seniors across its four homes located at Muduchur, Pallikaranai, Valasaravakkam, and Palavakkam in and around Chennai.
The organization uses a comprehensive screening process to identify and admit deserving senior citizens abandoned by their families. The residents are provided with comfortable accommodation, healthy food, medical care, entertainment, happy living and above all love and care. The homes are equipped with solar electricity, mosquito nets, washing machines, TV & audio systems to make the lives of the residents comfortable and peaceful.
Akshaya’s free old-age homes, known for their clean and healthy environment, well-defined process and dedicated staff members, have garnered the support of many generous donors. Many families regularly celebrate their special days with the old age home residents, creating an extended family-like environment. Impressed by the dedicated service of Akshaya Trust, many corporate and business houses too have been extending their financial assistance. Still, the ever increasing expenses in terms of food, shelter and medical treatments, demand the support of more generous donors, to help the cause.
