- Steps are being taken to appoint vice-chancellors as per the norms of the University Grants Commission: Governor
According to a statement from the Raj Bhavan, “Members expressed their concerns over the steady erosion of the autonomy of the universities. In most of the State Universities, there are large vacancies in teaching and non-teaching staff. There is an urgent need to make the recruitment process transparent to ensure the selection of eligible candidates only.”
The Governor said that Syndicate and Senate meetings were not held transparently in the universities. However, such bodies are unable to meet often due to unavailability of the concerned secretary to the state government and the meetings were held in the Secretariat instead of the universities.
He mentioned that many state universities are running without a regular registrar and controller of examinations and these posts are being manned for some years by ad hoc-in-charges.
The Governor also said that the functioning of the universities has been affected due to the lack of vice-chancellors and said that steps are being taken to appoint vice-chancellors as per the norms of the University Grants Commission. The attention of the State Government has been drawn in this regard for early notification of the Search Committee, the Governor added.
The academicians also suggested effective University-Industry linkages to ensure better employability opportunities for the students. Similarly, they also urged the need to engage on a short-term the experienced Professors from industries as “Professor of Practice” with the university, which will motivate students with practical insights into entrepreneurship.
Anandrao V Patil, I.A.S., Principal Secretary to Governor, officials and staff of Raj Bhavan participated in the meeting.
