AHMEDABAD, JULY 19

Buoyed by the success of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan movement, India uncovered its path to a cleaner, more sustainable future. In line with India’s declaration in the Paris Accord, the next stride in this direction aims to overstep waste & pollution management, transforming these menaces into productive avenues of energy and growth.

Under the Prime Minister’s Science, Technology and Innovation Council’s  ‘Waste to Wealth Mission,’  civic bodies have started deploying global technological capabilities to create socio-economic benefits for its citizens by addressing the issues of waste disposal,  land fills, deteriorating air quality and increasing pollution of water bodies. Solid waste conversion and its inventiveness into art forms is environmental management in its own right.

To drive home this message among Amdavadis, India’s first Unesco Heritage City Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has installed 10 theme-based sculptures using waste material across the city.

The Solid Waste Management Department of the AMC has taken up various measures to dispose of waste in enviro-friendly ways. Generating energy and the project of making sculptures out of waste materials help in saving the environment clean and also create awareness among the masses.
Under the Swatch Bharat initiative of the Centre, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has been recycling the collected waste after segregation and thus keeps the city environment clean. This special project is being funded by the Centre.

On the one hand the theme of making the best use of the waste enhances the beauty of the Heritage City Ahmedabad, and on the other sculptures that have been placed by the corporation in various areas of the city draws the attention of passersby to know the themes.

Speaking with navjeevanexpress.com, AMC Deputy Municipal Commissioner CR Kharsan said, “We collected scrap search material of various department of AMC like STP, Water treatment plants, etc. We roped in the services of Sculpture artist Sunil Shridhar to make 10 different sculptures and installed them at various vantage points. These sculptures are specially associated with Gujarat in general and Ahmedabad in particular.”

Mr. @BillGates, Co-Chair and Trustee @gatesfoundation called on Prof Ajay K Sood, @PrinSciAdvGoI. The discussion focused on priority engagement areas of India’s One Health Mission, and Waste to Wealth Mission among other PMSTIAC Missions and key areas of engagement. pic.twitter.com/liE6q0oqhG

Kharsan also added that these sculptures give various important social messages. “These sculptures will also give out a specific public message too. We installed two heritage sculptures, a child with spectacles blowing trumpet/flute and a kid flying a kite, to highlight the Festival of Makarsankranti  made out of pipes from water treatment waste and electrical cable rolls scrap. A sculpture of the Father of The Nation, Mahatma Gandhiji, has been installed at Ahmedabad airport junction. This is made from scrap material of AMC. This sculpture is a symbol of truth and nonviolence to create awareness on recycling waste. Thus we have made many sculptures depicting the investment savvy Gujaratis, knowledge hungry youngsters which give messages related to recycling, plantation, ‘Swatch Bharat’ etc.”

Answering a query on whether any company is sponsoring these projects as part of their CSR, he said that it was the entire initiative of AMC.  Public, print media, social media bloggers’  and commoners  have been posting various positive posts tagging these sculptures on social media. The AMC is getting fund under the Swatch Bharat Mission, the deputy commissioner added.
