CHENNAI, JULY 14

Union Home Minister and senior BJP leader Amit Shah will flag off Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai’s 120-day padayatra on Friday, July 28 from Rameswaram.

Titled ‘En Mann En Makkal – Prathamar Modiyin Tamil Muzhakkam’ (My land, my people – Prime Minister Modi’s clarion call to Tamils) the yatra will cover all 234 assembly segments and will end in Chennai on January 11, 2024 ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. Though it was to be a Padayatra earlier, it will now be partly by bus.

  • The Regional Consultative Meeting of BJP presidents from 11 States and national general secretaries held on Sunday decided to field Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Ramanathapuram

Annamalai will address the BJP meeting in Madurai on August 7. The 50th-day trek will be held at Paramathi Vellore and the 100th-day trek will be held at Vandavasi and Uttaramerur.

“Around one and a half lakh volunteers will participate during the inaugural day. About 5 thousand people participate in the Padayatra. This roadshow will be a preview of the parliamentary elections,” Narayanan Tirupathy, Vice President of the Tamil Nadu BJP said.

Meanwhile, BJP state vice-presidents Paul Kanagaraj, Chakravarthy, State President of Sports and Skill Development Amar Prasad Reddy met Director General of Police (DGP) Shankar Jiwal and submitted a tentative plan to request adequate security.

The padayatra was earlier scheduled to start in April from Tiruchendur. It had got postponed due to the elections in neighbouring Karnataka.

It was decided at the Regional Consultative Meeting’ of BJP presidents from 11 States and national general secretaries held on Sunday to field Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Ramanathapuram, which covers the abode of Lord Shiva, Rameswaram. It holds great religious significance for Hindus, second only to Kashi. Therefore, it could be a potential choice for Modi to contest from this place.

By fielding PM Modi from Ramanathapuram, the BJP is aiming to establish its presence in the south. Unlike Varanasi, this constituency from Tamil Nadu has a significant Muslim population.
