AHMEDABAD,  SURAT, APR 8

Expressing its commitment and solidarity to the nation and its independence struggle, ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India), a joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, contributed to the symbolic foot march (Padyatra), that marked the 91st anniversary of the historic Dandi March led by Mahatma Gandhi, says a company release.

AM/NS India arranged a tableau vehicle, which was moving along with the march, providing drinking water, bottled lime juice, biscuits, snacks, etc. to the marchers or padyatris.

The Padyatra, in commemoration of the historic movement, was flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Sabarmati. This major event’s re-enactment, organised by the Gujarat government, commenced on March 12 and concluded on April 5 in Dandi.

On this occasion, Anil Matoo –  Head of HR operations, IR & Administration at AM/NS India – said, “Our association with this historical event invokes a sense of pride. It feels privileged to have worked with the organisers to promote the message of ‘Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat’ and highlight the Self-Reliant India mission. AM/NS India stands committed to the nation-building.”

AM/NS India also distributed food packets, water and lime juice to the fire department personnel as well as other government officials who helped the marchers cross a river in Umrachhi village (Olpad, Surat). During this journey, the marchers halted at multiple locations along the way and attended a variety of programmes at each place, highlighting the socio-economic changes in the areas of cleanliness, environment, security and water conservation.

This activity has been planned as part of the 75th anniversary celebrations of India’s independence.

Mahatma Gandhi had staged this protest against the salt law imposed by the British regime by walking to Dandi from Sabarmati. The march which was a major non-violent protest took off on 12 March, 1930, to cover nearly a 380 km long journey.
