The Eastern Command of the Indian Army hosted the valedictory ceremony of the Short Term Intensive Elementary Chinese Language (Mandarin) Course at its Headquarters in Kolkata, awarding course certificates to 20 Army jawans. The event reinforced the Army’s commitment to enhancing linguistic capability, cultural intelligence and strategic preparedness in an evolving global environment.

Senior officers of Eastern Command attended the ceremony, underscoring the increasing importance of language proficiency in modern military diplomacy and international cooperation.

Building Linguistic Strength for Strategic Advantage

The ceremony began with an insightful report by Dr. Aparna Varma, Director I/c SICSSL, who detailed the curriculum structure, classroom engagement and overall performance of participants. She highlighted how such programmes empower soldiers to operate effectively in multicultural and multilingual contexts, particularly given the shifting geopolitical landscape.

Leadership Applause for a Strategic Skillset

The highlight of the event was the presentation of certificates by Lieutenant General Ram Chander Tiwari, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, SM, Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Command.
Congratulating the participants, he praised the instructors and stressed the strategic relevance of mastering languages like Mandarin:
“In today’s interconnected world, linguistic skills are no longer optional—they are strategic assets,” he noted.

Strengthening Diplomacy, Communication & Regional Stability

The Mandarin course forms part of the Army’s broader drive toward strategic communication, cultural understanding and enhanced military-to-military engagement. Mandarin proficiency is expected to:

  • Strengthen operational readiness in border management
  • Improve communication during joint or coordinated activities
  • Enhance diplomatic and people-to-people exchanges
  • Support peaceful cooperation and deeper regional stability

The ceremony concluded with a strong sense of pride among jawans, instructors and senior officers, marking another milestone in the Indian Army’s ongoing efforts to build a versatile, culturally aware and strategically agile force.
