Trinamool Congress Party panchayat president allegedly tied up two sisters, dragged them for a distance and beaten up for showing their protest against the encroachment of family land on Sunday.
The incident took place in Dakshin Dinajpur district in West Bengal. Video of this incident went viral on social media, based on this, the TMC panchayat leader Amal Sarkar was suspended by the party.
The victims belonging to BJP, a supporter of the women claimed. Meanwhile, the Inspector of Gangarampur Police Station Purnendu Kumar Kundu confirmed receipt of complaint and investigations are on. But nobody was arrested so far.
A victim had expressed her sufferings in the video that “they tried to hit me on my head with an iron road. I somehow managed to dodge the attack. When I fell down they tied my legs with a rope and dragged me for nearly 30 feet. I was beaten up, my modesty was outraged and I was threatened”.
According to the complaint, when Smriti Kana Das was being assaulted, her sister Shoma Das protested and tried to save her. But the accused attacked Shoma also and snatched her gold chain and mobile. When she fell on the ground the accused allegedly tied her legs and dragged her down the road. She was kicked and punched too.
Condemning the incident, Sukanta Majumdar, BJP MP from Balurghat said: “It was a barbaric act. We can’t imagine that such incidents are taking place in a civilized society. The Panchayat a leader should be immediately arrested.”
