GANDHINAGAR, SEP 21
Art lover and the pioneer of the multiplex revolution in Gujarat, Ashok Purohit, passed away on Tuesday morning after a prolonged illness. He was 78.
He is survived by two daughters, four brothers and their families.
His funeral will be performed tomorrow.
An architect by qualification, Ashok Purohit set up the City Pulse multiplex in Ahmedabad in the early 2000s to usher in the concept of multiplexes in Gujarat. In line with this tilt towards performing arts, he later set up City Pulse in Gandhinagar, which went beyond a traditional multiplex to emerge as a centre where filmmakers and artists interacted with audience.
Ashok Purohit’s house adjacent to the Gandhinagar campus used to be abuzz with a steady flow of noted dancers, singers, and performers, many of who became close friends.
He also founded the City Pulse Institute of Film and Television in Gandhinagar which became the first institute in India to offer a bachelor’s degree course in acting and master’s degree courses in film direction, scriptwriting, cinematography, etc.
