The Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK), a Muslim outfit, along with many political parties staged a statewide demonstration demanding to review the Ramjanmabhoomi-Babri Masjid verdict of the Supreme Court on Friday, said a TMMK release.
Meanwhile, six petitions were filed in the Supreme Court Friday seeking review of its 9 November judgment by five supporters of All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), the sixth one has been filed by Mohammad Ayub.
Thousands of men and women were courted arrest in Chennai, Thiruvarur, Vellore, Ramanathapuram and Coimbatore for defying the ban orders and staging the demonstration which was spearheaded by TMMK.
The main demands of the TMMK were review of the judgment delivered in the Babri Masjid case and expeditious punishment for the persons responsible for demolition of Babri Masjid and protection of places of worship of Minorities.
In Chennai, TMMK chief Prof. M.H. Jawahirullah, led the protest while G. Ramakrishnan. CPM. Viduthalai Siruthaigal Party general secretary Sinthanai Selvan, Tamizhaga Valurimai Katchi president Velmurugan, Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam general secretary Viduthalai Rajenderan. and Inigo Iruthayaraj of Christian Goodwill Movement of fraternal parties also addressed the demonstration.
Prof. M.H. Jawahirullah said: “The November 9 judgment on the land dispute of 464 years old Babri Masjid has been criticised by several legal luminaries and former Judges of the Honorable Supreme Court as outright denial of Justice. Hon’ble A.K. Ganguly, former Judge of the Supreme Court has observed that ‘the Muslims have witnessed the existence of a mosque in that site for several generations which has been demolished and a temple is going to be raised on the same site as per the judgment of the Supreme Court, which has raised several doubts in my mind. As a student of Constitutional law, it is very difficult for me to accept the judgment.” “Another former Supreme Court Judge Markandeya Katju condemned the judgment by observing that ‘the saddest day after the partition of the country was the day when the Babri Masjid was demolished. The Supreme Court judgment while declaring the act of demolition as illegal has however in the final part of the judgment contradicted itself by allowing the construction of Ram temple in the same site.”
Six review pleas filed in SC
Six petitions were filed in the Supreme Court Friday seeking review of its 9 November judgment which cleared the way for construction of a Ram Temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya.
While five pleas have been filed by Maulana Mufti Hasbullah, Moulana Mahfoozur Rehman, Mishbahuddin, Mohd Umar and Haji Nahboob, who are all supported by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), the sixth one has been filed by Mohammad Ayub.
These five review petitions, which are settled by senior advocates Rajeev Dhavan and Zafaryad Zilani, have been filed through advocate M R Shamshad.
On December 2, the first plea seeking review of Ayodhya verdict was filed in the apex court by Maulana Syed Ashhad Rashidi, legal heir of original litigant M Siddiq and also the Uttar Pradesh president of the Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind.
Rashidi stated in his review plea that “complete justice” could only be done by ordering reconstruction of the Babri Masjid.
While key litigant, Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Wakf Board, decided against challenging the verdict, Maulana Syed Ashhad Rashidi has sought review of the verdict on 14 counts.
