Polling, which began at 7:00 AM, witnessed Tamil Nadu clocking an all-time high of 84.69% turnout, while West Bengal (Phase-I) soared to 91.78%, the highest ever since Independence—surpassing previous records of 78.29% and 84.72% respectively (both in 2011).

The elections also covered bye-polls in key constituencies in Gujarat and Maharashtra, reflecting steady but comparatively moderate voter engagement.

Women Voters Outpace Men

A striking feature of the polling day was the higher participation of women voters. In Tamil Nadu, female turnout stood at 85.76%, surpassing male turnout of 83.57%. Similarly, in West Bengal Phase-I, women recorded 92.69% participation, significantly ahead of men at 90.92%—signalling a decisive shift in electoral engagement.

ECI Leadership Monitors Polls Live

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners S. S. Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, maintained real-time oversight of the polling process through 100% live webcasting across polling stations.

Scale of the Democratic Exercise

  • 386 Assembly Constituencies across two states
  • 9.33 crore electorate
  • Over 1.19 lakh polling stations
  • Nearly 6 lakh polling personnel deployed
  • More than 5,500 candidates in the fray

Tech-Driven Transparency & Faster Updates

Polling trends were updated with minimal delay as Presiding Officers uploaded data via ECINET before leaving polling stations, ensuring near real-time visibility of voter turnout.

Voter-Friendly Innovations Take Centre Stage

The Election Commission rolled out several citizen-centric initiatives:

  • Colour photographs of candidates on EVM ballot units
  • Mobile Deposit Facility (MDF) for voter convenience
  • Redesigned Voter Information Slips (VIS) for clarity
  • Cap of 1,200 voters per polling station for smoother flow

Inclusive Voting Gets a Push

Accessibility remained a key focus, with:

  • Wheelchairs and volunteers deployed at polling stations
  • Transport facilities arranged for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs)
  • Enhanced on-ground assistance to ensure no voter is left behind

While the data remains provisional—excluding service voters and postal ballots—the final figures will be published via ECINET index cards. Yet, the early trends unmistakably point to a resurgent, participative electorate redefining democratic engagement in India.
