Ahead of the Election Commission notifying the schedule for the Assembly elections, the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Friday adopted a Bill providing a 10.5% quota to the Vanniyar community within the 20% reservation for MBCs and Denotified Communities.
The Bill was moved by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and it was unanimously passed by the House.
However, the DMK and its allies were absent as they have been boycotting this session. The Bill also provides internal reservations for Denotified Communities (7%) and Most Backward Classes (2.5%) within the MBCs and DCs.
The Bill provides special reservations of seats for the Vanniyar community in educational institutions including private educational institutions in the State and appointments or posts in the state government services.

Palaniswami said there had been consistent representations from the MBC of Vanniyakula Kshatriya for providing separate reservation for them in admission to educational institutions and in appointments or posts in the services under the State as they could not compete with the other castes and communities included in the MBCs and DCs so as to get their due and legitimate share of such reservation benefits.
