As the assembly election is eight months away, the BJP has started marketing the Modi brand to reach out to the downtrodden in the state. One of the senior BJP leaders has announced that he will kickstart selling steaming ‘Modi idli’ with hot sambar at Rs 10 per plate from Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palanisami’s citadel Salem.
It is the brainchild of BJP Propaganda Cell State Vice-President S. Mahesh. He has come forward to offer 4 pieces of ‘Modi Idli’ with sambar at the cheapest price of Rs 10.
Ahead of this launch, ”Modi idli” posters have sprung up across Salem city as a blitzkrieg. The posters have the picture of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the left side, “four idlis for Rs 10” written in the centre and a photograph of Mahesh. “Lotus hero Mahesh presents Modi idly. Four idlis for Rs 10 with sambar, to be introduced soon in Salem. Made with modern kitchen equipment, tasty and healthy,” the posters read.
”Bharath” R Balasubramanian, BJP Tamil Nadu secretary, Media Cell, said the plan was to open 22 shops initially to sell the idlis, and depending on its success, the number of outlets would be increased.
Machinery for the project, to make 40,000 idlis per day has already arrived and is expected to start marketing ‘Modi idli’ from next week onwards, he said.
Incidentally, the ruling AIADMK is running Amma Canteens offering breakfast like idli, chapati, and lunch at highly subsidised rates. This has been emulated by many state governments in the country.
