Munjya is directed by Aditya Sarpotdar and produced by Dinesh Vijan and Amar Kaushik under Maddock Films. The film stars Abhay Verma, Sharvari and Mona Singh in the lead roles.
Set against the backdrop of Pune and Konkan, Munjya revolves around Bittu (Abhay Verma) who is head over heels in love with Bela (Sharvari) but when he goes to his hometown, he discovers his past and ancestral history wrapped around demons and paranormal activity unknown to Bittu. The movie is an ode to the revered Indian folklore with themes such as unrequited love, consent and a reflection of modern society at its core.
Director Aditya Sarpotdar said, “Munjya is one story that was in its writing process for 2-3 years and the research part was something I always wanted to go in the nitty-gritty of it because the story is personal and I wanted to do absolute justice with it because of the emotions attached to it. Bringing the story to life under Maddock has been so refreshing because they know the treatment that the horror comedy genre requires owing to Stree and Bhediya. I look at Munjya as a dark horse and when it did so well, it came as a surprise for us and that always shows that whatever form of content it is, it will always find its audience and ultimately good content prevails. It was so wonderful to have an amalgamation of new and experienced actors in the form of Mona, Sharvari, Sathyaraj and Abhay as they bring so much to the table and represent our hard work. With Munjya releasing on Disney+ Hotstar, it will surely elevate the movie-watching experience and reach every home.”
