Marking World Head Injury Awareness Day (March 20), Kauvery Group of Hospitals has sounded a clear, urgent message: timely access to Level I Trauma Care during the ‘golden hour’ can be the difference between life, death, and lifelong disability.

  • Race Against Time: Early access to Level I Trauma Care Centres critical for saving lives after severe head injuries
  • India’s Silent Crisis: Nearly 1.5 million head injuries annually; road accidents account for ~60%
  • Expert Edge: 24×7 neurosurgery, advanced imaging and rapid intervention define top-tier trauma care
  • System Strengthening: Faster transport, trained responders and public awareness can reduce disability burden
  • Tech for Life: SOS-enabled ambulance access via Kauvery Kare app boosts emergency response

The awareness initiative, graced by K Shankar, spotlighted the growing burden of head injuries—one of the most critical public health challenges driven largely by road traffic accidents.

Globally, over 50 million people sustain head injuries every year. In India, the figure stands at an estimated 1.5 million annually, with nearly 60% linked to road accidents, underlining the urgency for rapid, specialised trauma response systems.

Why the ‘Golden Hour’ matters

“Head injury is one of the most serious consequences of trauma, particularly in road traffic accidents. The outcome for the patient depends greatly on how quickly they reach a Level I Trauma Care Centre where specialised teams and advanced facilities are available round-the-clock. Early access during the golden hour can significantly improve survival and neurological recovery,” said Dr Krish Sridhar.

Trauma care is categorised into four levels, with Level I Trauma Care Centres representing the highest standard—equipped to handle the most complex and life-threatening cases with multidisciplinary expertise.

Life-Saving Intervention: minutes can decide outcomes

“Many serious head injuries require urgent neurosurgical intervention. Conditions like intracranial bleeding or brain swelling can deteriorate rapidly if not treated promptly. Immediate access to neurosurgical expertise, advanced imaging and intensive care… can make the difference between life and death or between full recovery and long-term disability,” said Dr Ranganathan Jothi.

He further explained on how a Mizoram-based IAS officer who fainted and found with head injuries was brought to Trauma care centre of Kauvery Vadapalani from its stand-by ambulance at Chennai Airport and started the treatment even without knowing his identity and saved his life.

Building a stronger trauma response ecosystem

“World Head Injury Awareness Day is a reminder of the growing burden of trauma. Strengthening trauma systems and ensuring rapid transport to advanced centres is critical. Across the Kauvery network, our trauma teams are equipped to provide comprehensive emergency care during the most critical moments,” said Dr Aravindan Selvaraj.

Kauvery Hospitals handles hundreds of trauma and head injury cases annually across Chennai facilities at Alwarpet, Radial Road and Vadapalani, where round-the-clock neurosurgical and trauma teams are in place.

What defines a Level I Trauma Care Centre

  • 24×7 availability of neurosurgeons, trauma surgeons, emergency physicians
  • Advanced imaging: CT scans, MRI
  • Dedicated trauma resuscitation teams
  • Immediate access to emergency operating theatres
  • Specialised neuro-critical care and ICUs
  • Multidisciplinary care for complex polytrauma

Tech-driven emergency response

Kauvery has further strengthened its emergency ecosystem with:

  • Advanced ambulance network
  • SOS feature in Kauvery Kare mobile app for instant emergency alerts
  • Faster patient transport to nearest trauma centres
