AHMEDABAD, SEPT 19

The parents of a 19-year-old college student, Keval Bhailal Patel, who was declared brain dead by attending doctors at a city hospital where he was being treated, have donated the organs of the deceased.  Later, his body was brought to the Kidney Hospital or Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC), Ahmedabad for organ harvesting, a hospital release said.

Following their timely donation, four persons received a fresh lease of life in Ahmedabad.

As a result, two kidneys, one liver, pancreas, and a heart was harvested from the deceased and successfully transplanted in four persons, a statement released by the Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC) said on Saturday.

Patel was injured in a freak accident on Wednesday morning after a truck hit his bike when he was on his way to Dhrangandhra.

Nineteen-year-old Keval Bhailal Patel was the sole child to his parents who decided to donate organs after their son was declared brain dead was under treatment at a city hospital and later brought for organ harvesting at IKDRC.

“We counseled the parents and told them that there is no possibility to revive him as he was brain dead as per conditions laid out in Glasgow test,” Dr Vineet Mishra, Director, IKDRC-ITS informed.

Keval was studying BSc at a college in Gandhinagar. But after the imposition of lockdown, he had gone to live with his parents in Sarwal village of Surendranagar district. “His relatives and parents understood the importance of organ donation and were convinced that their son would still be alive in someway in four different persons by donating organs,” added Dr Mishra.
