A youth from Cuddalore, who was declared brain dead, has given a fresh lease of life to three persons through organ donation.
The 30-year-old transport in-charge road accident victim suffered a subdural haemorrhage and was declared brain dead at the Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre (SRMC) in Chennai. His family consented to donate his vital organs.
“A native of Srimushnam in Cuddalore district, A Karunakaran, 30-year-old who was working as a transport in-charge at Salem Mines, Thirukazhukundram (Chengalpattu district) met with a road accident on Saturday and was admitted at SRMC. He had subdural haemorrhage and his condition did not improve despite intensive treatment and he was declared brain dead. He is survived by his wife Malarvizhi whom he had married 11 months ago, now four months pregnant and parents Ananthakrishnan and Inbavalli and two brothers came forward to donate his viable organs,” an SMRC release said.
In a marathon surgery, the organ transplant team of the hospital harvested his liver, heart valves, kidneys and cornea.
One kidney was transplanted on a 36-year-old man and the liver was transplanted on a 53-year-old person at the SRMC. Another kidney and heart valves have been shared with other hospitals and two corneas have been harvested and kept in the eye bank of SRMC, the statement added.
