Telangana Governor and Puducherry Lt Governor Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan on Friday said it is very important for women to get economically empowered.
International Women’s Day was celebrated on Friday (March 11) at Shastri Bhavan in Chennai by the Press Information Bureau and the Regional Outreach Bureau, under the theme ‘Break the Bias’. Taking part in the event as the chief guest, Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan said, “Women are unable to talk out in open about the crimes committed against them. This is because they are dependent on others. That is why it is so important for women to be economically empowered.”

With this in mind, the Union government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given priority to women entrepreneurship in various schemes, including the Mudra scheme, she said. The Governor pointed out that women get cooking gas connections under the Ujjwala Scheme and ownership of the house under the Prime Minister’s Housing Scheme.
Dr Tamilisai said she likes breaking barriers and all women should be ready to face anything with determination. The Governor quoted Swami Vivekananda and said a dog which chase people would run away if the person being chased, stood the ground and faced it with courage.
She said she is against women committing suicide fearing abuse. Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan stressed that everyone should have the courage to face the fact that we are born to live. Although she agreed that freedom in dressing is necessary, she noted it is important to ensure that the freedom to dress should not turn against women and it should be done in accordance with our culture.
Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan interacted with the audience on the core theme of this year’s International Women’s Day celebrations.

After the inaugural session, Deputy Commissioner of Police Smt C Shyamaladevi, Film Producer and Director Smt Kutti Padmini and Writer-Director Smt Geetha Ilangovan addressed the seminar.
This was followed by skit and mime competitions in which college students participated under the theme ‘Breaking the Bias’. Actor Shri Santosh Pratap and Ms Flora Rani, Head of Programmes, All India Radio, Chennai, were the judges. Ms Geetha Ravichandran, Principal Chief Commissioner, Income Tax, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
