In a transformative push to strengthen connectivity, economic growth and employment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated, dedicated to the nation and laid the foundation stone for infrastructure projects worth over Rs 4,400 crore in Madurai, marking a defining milestone in Tamil Nadu’s development trajectory.

Addressing a large gathering in the historic temple city, the Prime Minister declared that infrastructure development lies at the heart of national empowerment and inclusive progress.

“Building high-quality infrastructure is fundamentally about empowering people. These developments mean better roads for farmers to reach markets, easier travel for pilgrims and tourists, and faster transport for businesses,” Modi said.
He emphasised that the projects will improve connectivity and significantly benefit lakhs of people across Tamil Nadu while generating employment and catalysing regional economic growth.
Mega highway projects to unlock coastal and pilgrimage corridors
Highlighting the Centre’s sustained infrastructure push, the Prime Minister said, “Over the past twelve years, the Government of India has made significant investments in Tamil Nadu’s highway network, with more than four thousand kilometres of highways constructed since 2014.”
Among the major projects launched are:
- Four-laning of the Marakkanam–Puducherry highway, involving an investment of over Rs 2,100 crore, aimed at boosting coastal tourism and trade
- Four-laning of the Paramakudi–Ramanathapuram stretch, with an outlay exceeding Rs 1,800 crore, enhancing connectivity to pilgrimage centres including Rameshwaram and Dhanushkodi
These projects will ensure smoother logistics for agricultural and marine products while significantly improving regional mobility.
Railways transformation accelerates with record investments
Underscoring the unprecedented modernisation of Indian Railways, the Prime Minister said, “Over the last decade, Indian Railways has undergone a historic transformation, emerging as a modern, efficient and people-centric transport system, and is particularly visible in Tamil Nadu.”
He revealed that Tamil Nadu’s annual railway budget allocation has surged nearly nine-fold—from Rs 880 crore between 2009 and 2014 to Rs 7,600 crore for 2026–27.
Major railway milestones include:
- Over 1,300 km of new railway tracks laid
- 97% electrification achieved, boosting efficiency and sustainability
- Hundreds of flyovers and underpasses improving safety and travel speed
- Modernisation of 77 stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, with eight redeveloped stations inaugurated
The Prime Minister also highlighted the dedication of the Chennai Beach–Chennai Egmore fourth railway line, benefiting thousands of daily commuters.
Make in India drives railway innovation and employment
The Prime Minister highlighted the rapid expansion of indigenous railway manufacturing under the Make in India initiative.
“It is a matter of pride that our vision of ‘Make in India’ is boosting self-reliance and creating jobs for our youth,” he said.
Tamil Nadu currently operates:
- 9 Vande Bharat trains
- 9 Amrit Bharat trains, with coaches manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai
These developments reinforce India’s emergence as a global leader in railway manufacturing and innovation.
Rare Earth Corridors and bullet train vision to power next-gen economy
Pointing to Tamil Nadu’s strategic importance in future industrial growth, the Prime Minister said the Union Budget 2026–27 positions the state as a key hub in emerging technology and manufacturing ecosystems.
“The Union budget positions Tamil Nadu as part of the Rare Earth Corridors, promoting advanced manufacturing, research and technology development,” Modi said.
He also highlighted proposed high-speed rail corridors such as:
- Bengaluru–Chennai bullet train corridor
- Chennai–Hyderabad bullet train corridor
These projects are expected to revolutionise regional connectivity, boost industrial expansion and enhance economic competitiveness.
Heritage, tourism and industrial cluster push to create jobs
The Prime Minister emphasised Tamil Nadu’s unique cultural and economic potential, announcing plans to develop heritage sites such as Adichanallur into global tourism destinations.
Ecotourism initiatives around Lake Pulicat and Podhigai Malai will create sustainable employment while preserving ecological balance.
Additionally, Tamil Nadu stands to benefit significantly from a nationwide initiative to support nearly 200 industrial clusters aimed at strengthening manufacturing and generating employment.
Tamil Nadu key pillar in India’s developed nation vision


Reaffirming Tamil Nadu’s central role in India’s future, the Prime Minister concluded with a strong call for collective progress.
“Our collective goal is a developed Tamil Nadu for developed India,” Modi said, underscoring the Centre’s commitment to inclusive infrastructure-led growth.
The Rs 4,400-crore infrastructure push positions Madurai and Tamil Nadu firmly on the fast track to becoming major engines of India’s economic, industrial and logistics transformation.
