Canara Bank posts 19% rise in q2 net profit; asset quality at multi-year best

Canara Bank has reported a net profit of ₹4,774 crore for the quarter ended September 30, 2025, marking a robust 18.93% year-on-year growth, driven by healthy credit expansion, improved margins, and lower slippages.

The bank’s operating profit rose 12.20% to ₹8,588 crore, while global business reached an all-time high of ₹26,78,963 crore, a 13.55% increase over the same period last year.

“This quarter’s performance reflects the Bank’s sustained focus on growth with quality. Our strong asset quality, improved profitability, and digital momentum position us well for the next phase of expansion,” said K. Satyanarayana Raju, Managing Director & CEO, Canara Bank.

“We have deepened our retail and MSME franchise while maintaining prudent risk management and operational efficiency,” he added.

Business Growth and Segment Performance

Canara Bank’s Global Deposits grew 13.40% YoY to ₹15,27,922 crore, and Global Advances rose 13.74% YoY to ₹11,51,041 crore.

  • Retail, Agriculture and MSME (RAM) Credit grew 16.94% YoY to ₹6,71,141 crore.
  • Retail lending portfolio surged 29.11% to ₹2,51,190 crore, led by a 15.25% rise in housing loans and a 25.58% increase in vehicle loans.
  • MSME Credit expanded to ₹1,53,777 crore, up 12.70% YoY.

“Our retail momentum continues to be strong, driven by home and vehicle finance, while MSME and agriculture remain key pillars of our inclusive growth strategy,” Raju noted.

Asset Quality and Profitability Metrics

The bank’s asset quality continued to strengthen:

  • Gross NPA ratio improved to 2.35%, down from 3.73% a year ago.
  • Net NPA ratio stood at 0.54%, versus 0.99% in September 2024.
  • Provision Coverage Ratio (PCR) improved to 93.59%, up 270 bps YoY, highlighting sound provisioning standards.
  • Credit Cost reduced to 0.68%, while the Slippage Ratio improved to 0.76%.

Earnings per share (EPS) rose 20.68% YoY to ₹21.01, reflecting enhanced shareholder value.

Capital and Inclusion Benchmarks

The Capital Adequacy Ratio (CRAR) stood at a healthy 16.20%, with CET1 at 12.21% and Tier-I at 14.28%, ensuring sufficient cushion for business expansion.

Canara Bank also exceeded key financial inclusion targets:

  • Priority Sector Lending: 44.56% (norm 40%)
  • Agriculture Credit: 21.44% (norm 18%)
  • Credit to Weaker Sections: 20.14% (norm 12%)
  • Credit to Small & Marginal Farmers: 14.38% (norm 10%)
  • Credit to Micro Enterprises: 9.98% (norm 7.5%)

With a network of 9,948 branches — including 3,165 rural and 2,954 semi-urban — and 7,405 ATMs, the bank continues to expand its domestic and global footprint through branches in London, New York, Dubai, and IBU Gift City. The IBU opened 2 years ago at GIFT City in Gandhinagar played pivotal role for the growth of international business apart from three overseas branches, the MD & CEO said.

“We will be unveiling 10000th branch before the end of November 2025 and planned to open another 280 branches across the nation during this fiscal” Mr K. Satyanarayana Raju said.

“Our vision is to strengthen Canara Bank’s leadership as a digitally empowered, customer-centric, and globally competitive institution,” he concluded.
