In a moving tribute to the timeless legacy of Florence Nightingale, the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) conducted its 20th Lamp Lighting Ceremony for the first-year B.Sc. (Nursing) 2025 batch on Tuesday, at the Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Auditorium, Puducherry.
The ceremony, a hallmark event in nursing education, symbolises the transfer of knowledge, compassion and responsibility from experienced professionals to novice nurses — echoing the spirit of the “Lady with the Lamp.”

A Sacred Beginning to a Noble Profession
The programme commenced with the Dhanvantari prayer, followed by a welcome address by Dr. M. J. Kumari, Professor-cum-Principal (Ag.), College of Nursing, JIPMER.
Dr. Vikram Kate, Dean (Academic), JIPMER, graced the function as Guest of Honour, while Dr. Sukhpal Kaur, Professor-cum-Principal, National Institute of Nursing Education (NINE), PGIMER, Chandigarh, delivered the Chief Guest address. Dr. D. Kadambari, Dean (Research), and Dr. K. C. Premarajan, Ag. Deputy Director (Admn), JIPMER, felicitated the programme.
The annual report of the College of Nursing was presented by Dr. Vetriselvi P., Assistant Professor, and Dr. Lakshmi Ramamoorthy, Assistant Professor, highlighted the significance of the lamp lighting tradition to novice nurses.
She underscored that the ceremony represents the symbolic transfer of knowledge from experts to students and honours Florence Nightingale, pioneer of modern nursing — where young trainees light their lamps from those of senior professionals and dignitaries in the field.
The Nightingale Pledge
Ms. Pusphalatha K., Officer In-Charge, Nursing Section, JIPMER, administered the Nightingale’s Pledge. Holding illuminated lamps in their hands, the students solemnly recited the pledge before healthcare experts, administrators and proud parents — marking their formal initiation into the nursing profession.
The novice nursing students also presented a special song, invoking the auspiciousness of the ceremony. Outstanding academic performers were honoured by dignitaries, celebrating excellence alongside dedication.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr. R. S. Ramesh, Assistant Professor, College of Nursing, JIPMER.
As the lamps glowed across the auditorium, they reflected not just tradition, but a renewed commitment to care, compassion and clinical excellence.
