COIMBATORE, JULY 4
To encourage a culture of nurturing local ecology among people, farmers are planting about 25,000 saplings in five districts – Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Trichy, Thiruvarur and Perambalur- through the Cauvery Calling, the largest environmental movement in Tamil Nadu, as part of annual week-long ‘Van Mahotsav’ or ‘Forest Festival’, says a release.
“Cauvery Calling volunteers have organized sapling planting events on private agricultural lands from July 1-7. Farmers are planting 3,140 trees on 25.5 acres in Thanjavur, 6,000 trees on 26 acres in Trichy, 8,622 trees on 39 acres in Pudukkottai, 5,050 trees on 27.5 acres in Thiruvarur and 2,100 trees on 27 acres in Perambalur. Farmers have already transported the saplings from Isha Nurseries to their lands,” the organisers said.
Field workers of the Cauvery Calling movement studied the soil and water quality of agricultural lands and recommended soil-friendly and economically viable species that will significantly increase the income of farmers. They include Teak, Red Sandalwood, Sandalwood, Mahogany, Malabar Kino, Mountain Neem and other valuable timber trees.
Cauvery Calling volunteers facilitated the planting of millions of saplings on the remembrance days and birth anniversaries of agricultural scientists Nammazhvar, Nell Jayaraman and Maram Thangasamy all of whom have mentored various environmental projects in Isha.
