COIMBATORE, APRIL 25

Cauvery Calling Movement, an initiative of Isha Foundation has organized a mega training programme on ‘Pepper cultivation in plains’ on Sunday (April 28,2024) said Thamizhmaaran, Field Coordinator, Cauvery Calling Movement on Thursday.

Addressing reporters Thamizhmaaran said that a comprehensive Mega-training program focusing on the potential to cultivate pepper in the plains is being organized by the Cauvery Calling Movement. Scheduled for April 28. The program will take place at four locations across Tamil Nadu, including – Coimbatore, Pudukkottai, Mayiladuthurai, and Cuddalore.

Meyyanathan Siva V, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change for Tamil Nadu will grace the event as a special guest and inaugurate the program in Pudukkottai.

Thamizhmaaran said, “Most farmers think that pepper cultivation can only be done in hilly areas. However, through our field experience, we have found that pepper cultivation can be profitable in the plains as well.

Farmers in Pudukkottai, Cuddalore, and Mayiladuthurai districts have been successfully cultivating pepper in the plains for many years. Some farmers are earning an annual income of Rs. 6 lakh per acre from pepper alone. No other intercrop can yield such high profits. Also, some farmers are exporting to foreign countries.

After personally inspecting all these aspects, the Cauvery Calling Movement has been imparting pepper cultivation training in the plains for the past seven years. In continuation of this, we have organized a comprehensive mega-training program on pepper cultivation in the plains at four places in Tamil Nadu on the 28th of this month.

These programs will be held in the pepper plantations of pioneer farmers in the four districts, namely Coimbatore, Pudukkottai, Mayiladuthurai, and Cuddalore.

Pioneer farmers from various districts, along with agricultural scientists from the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka, will participate and discuss in detail many aspects, including the selection of pepper varieties, methods of planting and maintenance, harvesting methods, sales, and export opportunities.

The Deputy Director of the Aromatic Crops Board of India in Bodinayakkannur, Simanta Saikia, Principal Scientist at ICAR – IISR Karnataka, Dr. Mohammad Faisal, and pioneer farmers who have patented their pepper varieties, Mr. DD Thomas, and KV George, will participate in the training program as speakers, among many others.

Apart from this, through the farm visit program, farmers can witness and get their doubts clarified in person.

For more information and registration for the program, interested farmers can reach out at 94425 90081 or 94425 90079. The program in Coimbatore will take place in Pollachi, hosted on the natural farm of a pioneer farmer Valluvan,” he added.
