NE AGRICULTURE BUREAU
CHENNAI, OCT 12

In an effort to promote tree-cultivation in rainfed lands of Tamil Nadu and to take sandalwood cultivation to farmers, the Cauvery Calling Movement has organized a seminar on ‘Profiting in Crores through Sandalwood Cultivation for the Commonman’, on October 15th at the sandalwood farm in Palladam, Tirupur District. The seminar is expected to be conducted on a large scale with over 2,000 farmers participating.

Speaking to the media at the Chennai Press Club on Thursday, the field coordinator of the Cauvery Calling Movement, Thamizhmaaran said, “50 percent of the total cultivated land in Tamil Nadu is rainfed land. Farmers can earn good income by planting timber trees in these lands. Sandalwood, redwood, blackbead, mahua or butternut tree, neem tree, Lebbeck tree, Indian blackberry tree etc. are suitable trees for rainfed cultivation. Sandalwood and redwood grow particularly well in arid lands. These trees do not need much water. Farmers are assured of good income in future as these trees are of high value.:

Forestry scientists and pioneering farmers will explain sandalwood cultivation techniques, sales opportunities, and conservation methods in the seminar.

Scientist R. Sundarraj (Retd.) from the Institute of Wood Science and Technology, Bengaluru, scientist Soundararajan, Raman, a teacher who has cultivated redwood in rain-fed land, and Semmara Semmal Ganesan are going to participate and educate farmers in this seminar. Also, experts from Cauvery Calling Initiative will detail on tree-based agriculture.

The Cauvery Calling Movement encourages farmers to plant timber trees on agricultural land as tree-based agriculture is a solution to various issues such as economic development of farmers, environment conservation, ensuring healthy flow of rivers, etc. So far, Isha has distributed nearly 9 crore trees to farmers. This year, the target of planting 1.10 crore trees in Tamil Nadu through Cauvery Calling initiative has been set, and so far 46 lakh trees have been planted. It also conducts various awareness seminars on a regular basis. During this year, training was also conducted on jackfruit cultivation techniques, and cultivation of aromatic crops in the plains.

The seminar and training program on sandalwood cultivation training will be held at Shri. Duraisamy’s sandalwood farm at Palladam, Tirupur district. Farmers who want to cultivate tree crops are requested to participate and benefit from this seminar.

Farmers who want to participate in the program should contact 94425 90079, 94425 90081 for booking.
