British Council, the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities, is inviting all history enthusiasts and culture connoisseurs to immerse themselves in the celebration of Madras Day, says a release.

In observance of this historical occasion, British Council is organising a panel discussion and heritage walk in collaboration with the Madras Literary Society and Nam Veedu Nam Oor Nam Kadhai. The event aims to engage city enthusiasts in an exploration of Madras’ rich history, architecture, heritage, and literature.
The panel discussion on “Understanding Madras through Literature, Music, and History” will delve into the multi-faceted aspects of Madras through the lens of literature, music, and history. Distinguished panellists include Nivedita Louis, Author, Social and Feminist Historian; Meenakshi Devaraj, Historian/Kolam Artist; Monali Bala, Multi Genre/Multi Lingual Musician; Kombai Anwar, an Academic and Tamil documentary filmmaker; and Bessie Cecil, Textile Conservation & Research, Fulbright Scholar.
The engaging session will be moderated by Thirupurasundari Sevvel, Founder, Nam Veedu Nam Oor Nam Kadhai, providing valuable insights into the city’s evolution over time. The panellists will share how various resources like traditional songs, ancient poetry, inscriptions, oral narrations, and textiles have contributed to a deeper understanding of Madras.
