Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday visited Chennai and assessed the effects of Cyclone Michaung. The union minister conducted an aerial survey of affected areas and reviewed the situation.

The union minister along with Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu and Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena conducted an aerial survey on reaching Chennai. The union minister met Chief Minister MK Stalin and conducted a one-to-one meeting with him. He also participated in a review meeting along with the CM and the concerned officials.

  • PM has directed the Ministry of Home Affairs to release in advance the central share of the second instalment of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) of Rs 493.60 crore to Andhra Pradesh and Rs 450 crore to Tamil Nadu
  • Centre has approved the first urban flood mitigation project of Rs 561.29 crore for ‘Integrated Urban Flood Management activities for Chennai Basin Project’ under the National Disaster Mitigation Fund, which also includes central assistance of Rs 500 crore

Talking to presspersons, Singh said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi is distressed by the loss of lives in Tamil Nadu. He is personally overseeing the response to the current crisis and has spoken to CM MK Stalin. I have also been directed by the Prime Minister to personally monitor the situation here. Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Metrological Department, NDRF, and all central agencies have been doing the best they can to mitigate the current crisis.”

Singh added, “PM has directed the Ministry of Home Affairs to release in advance the central share of the second instalment of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) of Rs 493.60 crore to Andhra Pradesh and Rs 450 crore to Tamil Nadu. The Centre had already released its first instalment of the same amount to both the states.” Singh said that the Centre has approved the first urban flood mitigation project of Rs. 561.29 crore for ‘Integrated Urban Flood Management activities for Chennai Basin Project’ under the National Disaster Mitigation Fund, which also includes central assistance of Rs 500 crore.

Though flood water has been cleared from major areas, a few roads and subways remain closed due to waterlogging. The Manjambakkam to Vadaperumbakkam road has been closed for traffic movement and six subways including Rangarajapuram and Vyasarpadi subways have been closed.

According to Southern Railway officials, the Chennai suburban train services resumed normally on Thursday. However, a few Express trains were cancelled and stations were altered owing to the rains. On Thursday, Train no. 12679/12680 Dr. MGR Central-Coimbatore Intercity Express will originate and short terminated at Katpadi station. Similarly, services of five trains to Chennai were cancelled.

Residents staged road roko and protested at a few places urging the government to take measures to clear stagnated water in their area and restore power. DMK leader TR Baalu met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi today and sought flood assistance on behalf of the DMK government. Baalu told presspersons that the PM has assured necessary assistance.

Chief Minister MK Stalin continued his visit to the rain-affected areas in Chennai ahead of the landfall of Cyclone Michaung. He visited Anakaputhur locality near the city on Thursday and reviewed the relief work underway.

He also distributed relief materials including rice, blankets, and other essential commodities.
