In a significant achievement in the medical history of Gujarat, CIMS Super Specialty Hospital, Ahmedabad, has performed 25th successful heart transplantation surgery on Friday, becoming the first and only hospital in Gujarat and among the few in the country to have reached the landmark.
At present, CIMS is the only active Hospital doing Heart Transplants.
“CIMS Super Speciality Hospital Ahmedabad has completed 25 heart transplant surgeries in five years, of which the last 14 have been in the past one year and the last 8 in just two months and 4 Heart Transplants were performed in the last 3 weeks of December 21,” said Dr Dhiren Shah, Director and Chief of Cardiothoracic and Heart Transplant and this is all due to increase in Organ Donation awareness rate in Gujarat.
Incidentally, the first successful heart transplant surgery in Gujarat was also performed at CIMS Super Specialty Hospital in 2016.
The 25th heart transplantation surgery was performed on a 59-year-old from Ahmedabad city, on Friday morning.
“He was suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy, and his condition had worsened in the last 7-8 months. He was hospitalised thrice in recent months, but a matching heart was not found due to some complications,” said Dr Milan Chag, Interventional Cardiologist, Heart Failure and Heart Transplant Cardiologist.
He underwent the heart transplant surgery in the early hours of Friday, a day after a matching heart was found. The patient is in good condition and we wish him many happy years ahead.
The heart donor was a 32-year-old Vadodara resident who sustained severe injuries in a road accident on Wednesday, and was declared brain dead on Thursday.
We share the deep sorrow of the family and at the same time sincerely thank them to save a life by donating to the noble cause.
“We are thankful to patients for their faith in us, and we will continue to make efforts to establish new benchmarks in providing high-quality medical care,” said Dr Dhaval Naik, Cardiac and Heart Transplant Surgeon.
“The landmark also reiterates the superior skill and knowledge of our team of doctors and other professionals”, says Dr Chintan Sheth, Cardiac Anaesthesiologist and Intensivist.
CIMS Super Specialty Hospital, Ahmedabad, extends its gratitude to the donor and donor family for donating the heart, the State Organ Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO), Traffic police of Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Anand, Dr Deepali Tewari, Gujarat government, and other stakeholders who were involved in making the heart transplant successful.
