Coconut, copra price may decline in Feb-March, says TNAU analysis

The farmgate price of good quality coconut during February-March, 2020 will be Rs. 15-16 per nut. Good quality copra price will be around Rs. 90-95 per kg and fluctuation would be subjected to the variations in the arrivals from the major production centres in Tamil Nadu and other states, says an analysis conducted by the Tamil Nadu Agriculture University (TNAU) funded by the TN-IAM project, says a release.

A release from TNAU on Wednesday said that the third Advance Estimates of Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (2018-19), the area under coconut cultivation is 21.79 lakh hectares with a production of 147.48 lakh tones from the major coconut producing states – Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

Tamil Nadu produced 36.12 lakh tonnes of coconuts from the cultivable area of 4.37 lakh hectares in 2018-19. Coconut is mainly cultivated in Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Thanjavur, Dindigul and Kanyakumari districts. The arrivals of copra to Perundurai market are from Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Madurai, Villupuram, Pollachi, Pattukottai, Kambam, Theni, Mysore (Karnataka) and Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh). Also, coconut arrivals from Kerala will commence from January 2020 onwards.

During this season, the productions of coconut in major producing districts are also normal when compared to the previous season. The good monsoon will result in boosting coconut production in the coming months.

The TN-IAM Project funded Price Forecasting Scheme of the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University analyzed the past 18 years prices for coconut and copra that prevailed at Avalpoonthurai Regulated Market of Erode district and Perundurai Cooperative Marketing Society. As per the results of the analysis, the farmgate price of good quality coconut during February-March, 2020 will be Rs. 15-16 per nut. Good quality copra price will be around Rs. 90-95 per kg and fluctuation would be subjected to the variations in the arrivals from the major production centres in Tamil Nadu and other states.

Farmers are advised to take appropriate decision on selling their coconut produce, the report said.
