In a defining moment for India’s indigenous defence aviation journey, President Droupadi Murmu will take to the skies in the indigenously developed Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) Prachand at Jaisalmer on Friday, ahead of the Indian Air Force’s high-intensity firepower demonstration exercise in the Rajasthan desert.
The historic sortie, undertaken in a two-helicopter formation, will see the President—Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces—fly aboard the combat-ready Prachand, while Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, Chief of the Air Staff of the Indian Air Force, will pilot the accompanying LCH.
This landmark flight underscores India’s growing confidence in its indigenous defence manufacturing ecosystem and highlights the operational maturity of Prachand, the country’s first indigenously designed and developed combat helicopter.
The President’s participation carries profound symbolic and strategic significance. As she has emphasised in her interactions with the armed forces, “Our Armed Forces stand as a shining example of courage, discipline and selfless service to the nation. Their commitment inspires every citizen and strengthens India’s resolve.”
Designed and built by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, the Light Combat Helicopter Prachand is engineered for high-altitude warfare, capable of operating in extreme conditions including the world’s highest battlefields such as Siachen and Eastern Ladakh. Its advanced avionics, precision weapons, stealth features, and agility make it a formidable force multiplier.
According to the Ministry of Defence, “The LCH Prachand is uniquely designed to operate in high-altitude terrain and meet the specific requirements of the Indian Armed Forces, enhancing combat capability in challenging operational environments.”
Defence experts view the presidential sortie as a powerful endorsement of India’s indigenous defence platforms and a morale-boosting message to scientists, engineers, and military personnel driving self-reliance in critical combat systems.
HAL leadership has previously described Prachand as a transformational milestone, noting, “Prachand represents India’s capability to design and develop world-class combat helicopters, tailored to our operational needs and terrain.”
The President’s sortie ahead of the IAF’s live firepower exercise also signals India’s readiness to integrate indigenous platforms into frontline operational roles. It reinforces the nation’s determination to build sovereign combat capability and reduce dependence on foreign defence imports.
As Prachand lifts off over the golden sands of Rajasthan, it will not merely be a presidential flight—but a powerful national statement: India’s defence future is indigenous, confident, and airborne.
