Gujarat registered its highest single-day spike of 1,344 coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, said a release by the state health department on Friday evening.
It took the case tally in the state to 1,10,971, the release said.
16 COVID-19 patients, including a policeman in Rajkot, died in the state during this period, taking the death toll to 3,183, it added.
1,240 patients were discharged from hospitals in the last 24 hours, taking the total recoveries to 91,470.
Surat district registered 275 new coronavirus cases while Ahmedabad was in the second spot with 174 new cases.
Other districts where a significant number of new cases emerged included Rajkot (150), Vadodara (132), Jamnagar (116), and Bhavnagar (45).
Of the 16 persons who succumbed to the infection during the last 24 hours, five died in Surat, three in Ahmedabad, two each in Bhavnagar, Rajkot, and Vadodara, and one each in Gandhinagar and Banaskantha.
With over 71,600 tests conducted in 24 hours, the daily per million test average has gone up to 1,102.58.
Gujarat has conducted over 31.45 lakh tests so far.
Of 16,318 active cases, 94 patients are on ventilator.
With 91,470 patients discharged so far, the recovery rate now stands at 82.43 percent, the release said.

Surat cases rise by 275, nears 24k mark
The number of COVID-19 cases in Surat district increased by 275 in the last 24 hours to reach 23,886, while three deaths in city limits and two in the rural parts took the toll to 860, an official said on Friday.
This addition in the case count was the highest in the state for the day, officials said.
“Of the 275 cases, 174 were from Surat city limits and the rest from rural parts of the district. The number of people discharged over the last 24 hours, which stood at 242, is also the highest in the state for the day,” he said.
A Surat Municipal Corporation release said it was carrying out aggressive testing to contain the outbreak, adding that 1,129 autorickshaw and taxi drivers were tested, of which eight were detected with the infection, it said.
It also urged people to not sit in a taxi if the driver is at the wheel without a mask.
Surat’s caseload is the second highest in the state, with Ahmedabad leading with 33,378 cases.
174 new cases in Ahmedabad, three deaths
As many as 174 new coronavirus cases emerged in Ahmedabad district in the last 24 hours, said a release by the state Health Department on Friday evening.
With the addition of 174 cases, Ahmedabad’s tally of COVID-19 cases reached 33,378.
Three COVID-19 patients died during this period, taking the death toll in the district to 1,767.
The release added that 127 infected persons undergoing treatment at different hospitals in the district were discharged in the last 24 hours.
The tally of recovered patients in the district has now gone up to 27,406. These recoveries include 108 from the city.
As part of an aggressive testing strategy, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has deployed a team at the city’s Kalupur railway station to screen incoming passengers.
On Friday, of the 1,885 passengers screened upon arrival, 22 tested positive and were shifted to designated COVID hospitals, said an AMC release.
Out of the total 3,183 COVID-19 deaths registered in Gujarat so far, 1,767 deaths were from Ahmedabad district.
