Stating that interests of daily wage labourers, small as well as big shop owners and self-learning people should be kept in mind if the lockdown is extended beyond May 3, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani favoured a gradual lifting of the coronavirus-enforced nationwide lockdown during interaction of CMs with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday through video-conferencing, said an official here.

“Lockdown needs to be gradually lifted. The state will follow the Centre’s guidelines and lift the lockdown in a gradual and step-by-step manner, depending on the number of (COVID-19) cases going down (in different areas), secretary in the Chief Ministers Office, Ashwani Kumar, told reporters, quoting Rupani telling the meeting via video link.
Gujarat, with 3,301 novel coronavirus cases and 151 deaths so far, is second only to Maharashtra on both counts in the country.

Kumar said at the PM-CMs meeting, Rupani gave details regarding how Gujarat is fighting the virus and decisions taken to open some sectors of the economy (outside containment zones & COVID-19 hotspots) to bring the life back to normalcy.

Rupani presented a detailed picture of how Gujarat is fighting against coronavirus. He said the state is testing extensively and conducting detailed surveys and surveillance (to detect positive cases) in big cities, Kumar said.

Rupani informed that the state has 61 dedicated COVID-19 hospitals that have 10,500 beds with the required number of ICUs and ventilators.

“We will increase the number of beds in a week to 22,500 in our COVID-19 Care Centres, he said, quoting the chief minister.
The chief minister told the meeting that Gujarat is analysing reasons for the high COVID-19 fatality rate as 151 people have died so far, which comes to 4.57 percent (of total cases), more than the national average of 3.07 percent.

We are analysing the cause of the death rate in Gujarat due to COVID-19. The pattern that has emerged is that 85 percent of those who have died had co-morbid conditions (pre-existing illnesses), Rupani told the meeting.
Rupani said three districts of the state have so far not recorded any COVID-19 case, while 18 districts have only single-digit cases. So the situation is under control in these 21 districts, the CMO official informed.

The chief minister apprised the meeting about the decisions taken by the state government to ease the lockdown, imposed in late March, in select areas, Kumar said.
He informed the meeting about relaxations given to farmers for crop harvesting and other activities, and also to fishermen.
“Rupani informed about starting industries in rural areas, permission given to construction projects in urban areas with conditions and opening of standalone shops, Kumar said.

Modi held a video-conference with the chief ministers of various states and Union territories to discuss the situation arising in the country due to the COVID-19 outbreak and the lockdown imposed to stem its spread.
89% of total cases from Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara: Ravi
The state administration has been closely monitoring the situation of COVID-19 and is working day and night to curb the crisis in Gujarat, a senior health department official said.
Providing details about COVID-19 cases, Dr.Jayanti Ravi, Principal Secretary of Health Department said, “ 89% of the total COVID-19 cases are from Ahmedabad, Surat, and Vadodara. Ahmedabad accounts for 65%, Surat accounts for 16% and 8% from Vadodara. The remaining 27 districts account for 11% of the total positive cases. Amreli, Junagadh, and Devbhoomi Dwarka remain unaffected.”

The state government has undertaken a new project under telemedicine to provide treatment and guidance to the affected patients. Physicians, gynaecologist, dermatologists, and paediatricians provide necessary guidance from 10 am to 5 pm under this project. The co-ordination and overall management are being done through the office of the Health Commissioner. People of 31 districts are availing benefits of telemedicine at the moment.
56,259 calls have been registered on the 104 helpline number out of which 2,376 people have availed necessary treatment. 12,384 calls have been registered on the 1100 helpline number out of which 6298 were related to COVID-19 and the remaining 6086 were related to other things like immunity, health, hygiene, etc.

75 affected people of Samras hostel in Ahmedabad are being provided Sanshavati tablets twice a day since April 24, 2020. In addition to that, they are also being provided the Arsenicum Album 30 potency tablets. Similarly, people under quartile are also provided necessary medicines and health treatment.
Govt to try ayurvedic drugs on select COVID-19 patients
The Gujarat government will administer Ayurvedic medicines to 75 asymptomatic COVID-19 patients in hotspot Ahmedabad to see the “time duration of their recovery” as a part of an AYUSH treatment study, a state health department official said on Monday.
Principal Secretary (Health) Jayanti Ravi said the state AYUSH department had distributed an Ayurvedic medicine free-of-cost to over 1.26 crore people in Gujarat intending to boost their immunity.

“As many as 7,778 people under quarantine were given the Ayurvedic medicine, and only 21 out of them tested positive for coronavirus,” the bureaucrat said.
Ahmedabad has reported a rapid spread of coronavirus and a mortality rate at 4.71 percent which is higher than the national average, as per the state government.
The biggest city in Gujarat so far reported 102 deaths with a total of 2,167 coronavirus positive cases.

“We have started a new initiative regarding AYUSH treatment on coronavirus positive patients. A total of 75 asymptomatic patients admitted at a COVID Care Centre in Ahmedabad have agreed for Ayurvedic treatment to see the duration of time in which they recover,” Ravi said in a video message.

The 75 patients will be given Ayurvedic medicines like Samshamni Vati, Dasmool Kvath, Trikatu Churna, besides tulsi, neem, turmeric, etc, and will be placed on a special diet, Ravi said.
Meanwhile, an AYUSH department official said the Ayurvedic medicine, ‘Ukala Amrutpey,’ had been distributed to 1.26 crore people through various Ayurvedic and Homoeopathic dispensaries with the hope to boost their immunity.
It was also made available through Panchayat offices, the official said.
“We have distributed Ukala Amrutpey to over 1.26 crore people using the network of 568 Ayurvedic centres and 38 hospitals. This particular medicine was suggested by a group of 22 experts, and we started its distribution as a preventive medicine on March 6 when no coronavirus case was reported in the state,” said AYUSH department Director Bhavna Patel.
Sarpanchs, as well as Talathi-level officials, have also been helping in the distribution of the medicine, she said.
“The ‘Ukala Amrutpey’ liquid is a mixture of various herbs that are to be consumed for a week without a break. It is especially effective to boost immunity to fight infections like coronavirus,” Patel said.
She said while Ayurvedic tablet ‘Samshamni Vati’ had been distributed to more than 3.7 lakh people, the AYUSH department also gave out Homoeopathic medicine ‘Arfenicum Album-30’ to 85.7 lakh people in the state.
Lincoln Pharma gets Gujarat Food & Drug Regulator nod to manufacture COVID-19 drugs
Lincoln Pharmaceuticals on Monday said it has received approval from the Gujarat Food and Drug Control Administration to manufacture hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) among other critical drugs to treat COVID-19, at its Khatraj facility in Ahmedabad.
The company has received approval from the state regulator to manufacture varied dosages of HCQ tablets and HCQ sulfate tablets among others at Khatraj plant, Lincoln Pharma said in a statement.
After necessary approval from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), the company will be able to export these products, it added.
The approval by the state regulator is to manufacture both the drugs in the strengths of 200 mg, 300 mg, and 400 mg, the statement said.
“We have all the necessary infrastructure at our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility at Khatraj, Ahmedabad, and look to expedite the commercial production of the approved drugs at the earliest,” Lincoln Pharmaceuticals MD Mahendra Patel said.
The company is committed to fighting the COVID-19 pandemic and working closely with governments and relevant stakeholders to ensure an uninterrupted supply of medicines, he added.
India is the largest producer of HCQ and taking a lead in supplying it to the world in this time of crisis, the statement said.
