A city sessions court on Wednesday granted conditional bail to Congress leader Hardik Patel, who was arrested after the court issued a warrant against him for skipping court proceedings in a sedition case.
Additional sessions judge B J Ganatra placed a strict condition on Patel for bail, mandating that he never seek adjournments and skip court proceedings to delay the trial in the sedition case, in which two other persons are being tried along with Patel.
On Monday, Patel assured the court that he would never act in a way that could result in a delay of the trial. He also promised the court that he would not tender any adjournment application in the future.
On Saturday, the court issued an arrest warrant against Patel on a request by public prosecutor Sudhir Brahmbhatt for Patel’s continued absence in the courtroom during the trial of the 2015 sedition case. Patel had sought exemption from appearance during the proceedings because he had to attend a social function, but the court rejected his application.
