Gujarat recorded its highest single-day spike of 1,515 coronavirus cases on Saturday, taking the caseload to 1,95,917, the state health department said.

The previous record increase in infections in the state was 1,442, reported on September 25. Since then, the numbers were falling, going below the 900-mark before the recent rise.
With the death of nine patients on Saturday, the COVID-19 fatalities in the state rose to 3,846, the department said.

At the same time, a total of 1,271 patients were discharged. It took the number of recovered cases to 1,78,786.
With a surge in new daily cases, the state”s COVID-19 recovery rate has come down to 91.26 percent.
But the government has also increased testing, with 70,388 tests conducted during the day at the rate of 1,082.89 tests per day per million population, the release said.

A total of 71,71,445 samples have been tested for coronavirus in the state so far.
Ahmedabad witnessed the daily spike in infections crossing 300-mark for the second day in the row after nearly five months. The district reported373 new cases, followed by Surat at 262 cases, Vadodara 164, and Rajkot 137.
Among other districts, Gandhinagar reported 89 new cases, Banaskantha 55, Mehsana 53, Patan 51, Jamnagar 41, Kutch 30, Amreli 24, Panchmahal 23, Kheda 20, Bhavnagar and Mahisagar 19 each, Sabarkantha 17, Surendranagar 15, Dahod and Morbi 14 each, Aravalli and Narmada 12 each.
Five out of nine COVID-19 deaths on Saturday were reported in Ahmedabad alone, two in Surat, and one each in Rajkot and Gir Somnath districts.
The number of active cases increased to 13,285, with as many as 95 patients on the ventilator, said the department.
In the Union Territory of Daman, Diu and Dadra, and Nagar Haveli, the total COVID-19 cases rose to 3,289, with one new case being reported in DNH.
The tally of recovered cases in the UT is 3,248, and active cases 39, officials said.

Ahmedabad’s COVID-19 caseload up by 373; five more die
With the addition of 373 fresh cases of COVID-19, the tally in Ahmedabad district rose to 46,968 on Saturday, an official from the state health department said.
This is the second consecutive day that the daily count of infections has crossed the 300-mark in the district.
At least 322 patients were discharged from hospitals during the day, while five died of the infection, the official said.
The latest casualties have taken the toll to 1,960, and the count of recoveries has reached 41,608, he said.
Of the latest cases, Ahmedabad city reported 354 infections, one of the sharpest rises ever recorded in the city since the outbreak of the pandemic.
According to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, with 470 infections, the city”s west zone has the highest number of active cases, followed by the north-west zone with 463 infections and the south-west zone with 446.
The central zone continues to have the lowest number of active cases at 295.
In rural Ahmedabad, the number of COVID-19 cases rose to 3,323 with 19 new cases.
As many as 3,243 patients have been discharged in rural areas, which have a recovery rate of 97 percent, the official said.
Ahmedabad will be under curfew till Monday morning, and subsequent night curfews have been imposed until further orders to combat the surge in fresh cases.
The city wore a deserted look, as only milk and medicine stores were allowed to stay open, with police personnel present at all prominent points to enforce the lockdown.

Surat district reported 262 coronavirus cases and two deaths on Saturday, while 218 people, including 179 from city limits, recovered from the infection, an official said.
While the district’s caseload is 39,951, the toll stands at 1,049, he added.
“Of the new cases, the city accounted for 211 and the rural parts 51. The rural part of the district also saw 39 people getting discharged during the day,” he said.
With 28,388 persons getting discharged so far, the city”s recovery rate rose to 94.1 percent, said a Surat Municipal Corporation official, adding that 416 patients are currently in hospital and 12,335 in quarantine.
“Out of these 416 patients, 135 are admitted in two government hospitals. The bed occupancy rate of the civil hospital is 2.92 percent, while that of SMIMER Hospital is 8.53 percent,” the SMC official informed.
COVID-19 cases in Kamrej of rural Surat have risen to 2,195, the highest among nine talukas, with eight new cases on Saturday, while Choryasi is second with 2,101, and Umarpada lowest with 78.
