Tamil Nadu on Tuesday logged 671 new COVID-19 cases taking the tally to 8,27,614 while the death toll increased to 12,236 with eight more fatalities.
Significantly, the daily case count dipped below the 200 mark in the state capital after over eight months. The city had recorded 174 cases on May 2 last year. On Monday, Chennai reported 201 cases.
The active cases dipped to 6,807 with 827 people getting discharged from various hospitals and in total 8,08,571 patients have got cured.
The 600-plus new cases include two more returnees from the United Kingdom, four from other states including Andhra Pradesh, 194 from Chennai and the remainder was scattered across other regions of the state, a Health department bulletin said. The state case tally of 8,27,614 covered 2,28,169 from here.
From 24, the number of returnees from the UK to test positive has increased to 26. The contacts of returnees to test positive stood at 20 as before. The count of UK returnees who have turned positive till date is included in the overall state tally.
The eight dead included a 48-year old woman and a 38-year old man, and totally six had co-morbidities and two had nil chronic illness. The death toll of 12,236 is inclusive of Chennai’s 4,053.
As many as 60,563 samples were tested and 1,49,45,576 is the aggregate number of specimens examined till date in 249 COVID labs.
Cases see dip in Puducherry with 18 additions
Puducherry witnessed a drop in the number of daily coronavirus infections with only 18 people testing positive to the virus on Tuesday, pushing the aggregate to 38,495.
One more person succumbed to the viral infection, raising the toll to 639. The deceased aged 38 years had liver disease among other co-morbidities, a release from Director of Health and Family Welfare S Mohan Kumar said. The 18 new cases were identified at the end of examination of 3,637 samples. The fatality and recovery rates were 1.66 percent and 97.58 percent respectively.
The Director said 28 patients were discharged from hospitals during the last 24 hours. Puducherry region accounted for 10 new cases out of the total 18 fresh cases followed by four each in Karaikal and Mahe regions. Yanam did not report any fresh case of infection, the Director said. He said so far 5.21 lakh samples were tested and 4.78 lakh out of them were negative.
The total active cases were 293 while 37,563 patients recovered and were discharged so far and fatalities were 639.
