Even as the increase in coronavirus cases in Gujarat continues unabated, the state government on Wednesday claimed the situation was improving as the death rate has come down to 1.5 percent.
Speaking to reporters in Gandhinagar, Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel said the mortality rate, which was 6.5 percent in March-April, had now fallen to 1.5 percent.
“Against 50 deaths being recorded on a single day earlier, the daily toll has now come down to 15,” Patel said.
Gujarat on Wednesday reported a new high of 925 new coronavirus cases which took case count to 44,648, the state health department said. With 10 patients succumbing to the viral infection, the death toll reached 2,081, it said.

Patel, who handles the health portfolio, however, pointed out that the period during which cases doubled has improved.
“People were getting infected very fast earlier. There was a time when the doubling rate was nine days. Now with the government’s proactive measures, it has improved to 32 days,” he said.
Even the recovery rate had improved significantly in Gujarat, the deputy CM said.

From the earlier 30 percent, the recovery rate now stands at 70 percent, Patel said, adding that 30,550 COVID-19 patients have recovered so far.
42,051 hospital beds were available to treat coronavirus patients, he added.

State cases reach 44,648, highest 1-day spike in Surat
Gujarat on Wednesday reported the highest single-day spike of 925 new COVID-19 cases, taking the total count to 44,648, while the death toll mounted by 10, including five fatalities in Surat, to 2,081, the health department said.
The number of the recovered cases rose by 791 to 31,346 in the day.
Gujarat now has 11,221 active cases, of whom 61 patients are in a critical condition, it said.
Surat reported the highest number of 236 cases and five deaths in the state in the day, it said.
With this, Surat’s COVID-19 tally crossed the 9,000-mark and reached 9,186, while the death toll mounted to 355, the health department said.
Ahmedabad reported 173 new cases, taking its tally to 23,599 while the fatality count rose by two to 1,527.
One fatality each was reported in Bhavnagar, Navsari, and Gandhinagar districts, the department said in a release.
At 223, Surat also reported the highest number of recovered cases in the day, followed by 212 in Ahmedabad.
The total number of discharged patients in Surat now stands at 5,619 and at 18,399 in Ahmedabad, it said.
A total of 4,87,707 samples have been tested so far in the state.
Ahmedabad records 173 new cases; 212 discharged
The coronavirus tally in Ahmedabad district rose to 23,599 after 173 new cases were reported on Wednesday, the state health department said.

With two COVID-19 fatalities, the death toll rose to 1,527, it said.
Also, 212 coronavirus patients were discharged in the district, raising the number of recovered cases here to 18,339, the department said in a release.
As many as 159 new cases were reported from areas under Ahmedabad municipal limits (the city), and 14 from rural parts of the district, the department said in a release.

Both the deaths reported on Wednesday were from the city.
Out of the 212 new recoveries of patients, 201 were reported from the city and 11 from rural parts of the district, said the release.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) continued to revise the demarcation of micro-containment areas in the city as part of its efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19.
It has removed five existing areas from the list and added 20 new localities from where new cases were reported.
With this, the number of micro-containment areas in Ahmedabad city has risen to 210, the AMC said.
With 14 new cases reported from Ahmedabad’s rural areas, the COVID-19 tally crossed the 1,000-mark and rose to 1,005.
The number of recovered cases in Ahmedabad rural has gone up to 844, which is around 84 percent of the total cases.
