Gujarat on Thursday reported 11,176 new coronavirus positive cases, highest in nearly eight months, while five patients succumbed to the infection, the state health department said.

With the new cases, the state’s caseload reached 8,96,894, while the death of five patients – one each in Ahmedabad, Surat, Valsad, Rajkot and Bhavnagar – took the toll to 10,142, it said in a release.
On Wednesday, the state had witnessed 9,941 infection cases and four deaths.
At 3,697, Ahmedabad city recorded the highest number of infections, followed by 2,690 in Surat city, 950 in Vadodara city, 440 in Rajkot city and 337 in Valsad district.
As per the latest data available on the COVID-19 dashboard, Gujarat’s positivity rate is 9.52 percent.

While Ahmedabad district’s positivity rate is 27.40 percent, Surat district stands second with 16.45 per cent.
The recovery count went up to 8,36,140 as 4,285 patients got discharge during the day, the release said, adding that of the total 50,612 active cases, 64 patients are on ventilator support and 50,548 are stable.
As many as 9.44 crore doses of anti-coronavirus vaccines were administered to the eligible population so far, of which 3.11 lakh jabs were given during the day.
At present, Gujarat has 138 laboratories to conduct RT-PCR tests to detect the infection.
Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel on Thursday told reporters that new testing laboratories will be set up in 40 sub-district hospitals across the state soon.
While 97,000 beds, including 8,000 ones with ventilators, have been kept ready across the state, if required the government can also set up a new hospital on emergency basis, with the help of DRDO, he added.

Meanwhile, 27 new infection cases and 18 recoveries were reported in the adjoining union territory of Dadra Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu in the last 24 hours, an official release said.
So far, 10,886 people have been found infected in the union territory. While there are 179 active, cases, four persons have so far succumbed to the infection and 10,703 have recovered, it said.

CM participates in PM’s meet; 94.5 pc adults fully vaxed
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Thursday participated in a virtual meeting held by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to review the COVID-19 situation after a surge in cases in the country and spread of the Omicron variant.
The state government separately said 94.5 per cent of the adult population in Gujarat has been fully vaccinated against coronavirus.
“Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, health minister Rushikesh Patel and minister of state for health Nimisha Suthar participated in the meeting held by Modi,” a statement from the CM’s office said.
Senior officials like chief secretary Pankaj Kumar and health secretary Manoj Agarwal also attended the meeting, where the PM spoke about how to tackle the present wave of coronavirus, the statement said.
The meeting also reviewed the ongoing coronavirus vaccination programme.
Meanwhile, the state government said 94.5 per cent population aged 18 and above has been fully vaccinated against coronavirus in Gujarat.
The percentage of people who have received the first dose of coronavirus vaccines stood at 98, it said in a separate statement.
The statement said 57 per cent of teenagers in the age group of 15 to 18 years have been vaccinated in the state with the first dose after inoculation started for them from January 3.
A large number of healthcare and frontline workers in Gujarat have also received precaution or booster dose which started from January 10, it added.

11 more people test positive at IIMA; tally reaches 81
Eleven more people at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad have tested positive for coronavirus, raising the infection tally at the leading business school to 81 in the last two weeks, the IIMA said on Thursday.
Out of the 98 people who were tested on Tuesday by health teams, the reports of 11 came out positive for the coronavirus, the institute said in a release.
A total of 81 people, including these 11, have been found infected with the coronavirus from December 31, 2021 to January 11, 2022, as per the IIMA”s dashboard. These include students, faculty members, employees, contractual staff, community members and others, it said.
“All those who have tested positive at the IIMA are on the road to recovery with no serious cases. Presently, about 95 per cent are asymptomatic and 5 per cent of those who are symptomatic have no symptoms after 3-4 days of medical care,” the IIMA said in a statement.
Among the 81 found infected since December-end, 67 cases are still active, including 34 students, six faculty members and 27 others, as per the institute”s COVID-19 dashboard. Since September 2020, a total of 543 people, including 214 students, at the IIMA have tested positive for coronavirus and out of them, 476 have recovered, it said.
