Fines to the tune of Rs 8.82 crore have been collected between December 14 and 20 by police in Gujarat from people violating the mask rule amid the coronavirus outbreak and those spitting in public, an official said on Monday.

A release issued by the state police said fines were collected from 88,593 people, with Rs 1.25 crore collected on an average from 12,500 violators per day.

It said 8,536 people were arrested statewide under section 188 of IPC for violating COVID-19 guidelines, and 6,063 vehicles were seized under the Motor Vehicles Act in Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot, and Vadodara cities where night curfew is in place.

The fine for not wearing a mask in public places in the state is Rs 1,000.

After over 1 month, state reports sub-1,000 COVID-19 cases

Gujarat recorded 960 new coronavirus cases on Monday — a sub-1,000 count reported after a gap of more than a month — taking its tally to 2,36,259, while 1,268 patients recovered from the infection, the state health department said.

The statewide death toll rose to 4,241 with seven fresh COVID-19 fatalities, said the department in a release.

As many as 1,268 patients were discharged from hospitals during the day, pushing the tally of recovered cases to 2,20,393, it said.

With this, the state’s recovered rate stood at 93. 28 percent.

There are now 11,625 active cases in the state with 66 patients being on ventilators, the release said.

With 960 new infections, Gujarat recorded the daily COVID-19 cases in three digits after a gap of over one month.

Ahmedabad recorded 211 new cases, followed by Surat at 150, Vadodara 135, and Rajkot 122.

Among other districts, Gandhinagar recorded 40 new cases, Kutch 31, Banaskantha 26, Junagadh and Panchmahal 24 each, Mehsana 21, Dahod 17, Kheda 16, Jamnagar 15 Anand 13 and Bharuch 11, etc.

Out of the seven new fatalities, four were in Ahmedabad and three in Surat, said the release.

As many as 54,612 tests were conducted for the virus in the last 24 hours at a rate of 840.18 tests per day per million population, it said.

With this, a total of 91,08,393 samples have been tested for COVID-19 in Gujarat so far.

In the Union Territory of Daman, Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli, the number of total COVID-19 cases and recoveries remained unchanged at 3,335 and 3,325, respectively, officials said.

Two patients have died so far, while eight others are under treatment in the adjoining UT, they said.

Gujarat COVID-19 figures are positive cases 2,36,259, new cases 960, deaths 4,241, active cases 11,625 and people tested so far 91,08,393.

Ahmedabad reports 211 cases, 4 deaths; 205 recover

The COVID-19 tally in Ahmedabad rose by 211 to reach 55,796, while the death of four patients took the toll to 2,214, an official said.

The number of people discharged reached 50,579, including 205 during the day, he added.

“The city accounted for 204 of the new cases and 202 of the recoveries, while the rest were from rural areas. The city’s north-west zone has 420 active cases, followed by 413 in the south-west and 410 in the west,” said an Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation official.

The number of micro containment zones in the city was now 15.

The SVP Hospital here, run by AMC Medical Education Trust, on Monday said it would begin OPD services and indoor treatment in departments that were closed when the facility was turned into a COVID-19 one amid the outbreak.

The hospital said it had treated 12,000 COVID-19 patients so far and had now decided to operationalise its departments for those afflicted with other ailments due to a drop in coronavirus cases.

Surat district reports 150 new cases; three deaths

Surat district on Monday reported 150 fresh COVID-19 cases and three fatalities, taking the count of infections to 47,683 and the death toll to 1,122, the state health department said.

A total of 155 people were discharged in the day in the district.

Surat city’s case recovery rate rose to 95.39 percent with 34,045 patients being discharged so far, said the Surat Municipal Corporation.

A total of 249 patients currently remain admitted in various hospitals in the city, while 11,334 people are placed in quarantine.

At 2,461, Kamrej taluka has the highest number of COVID-19 cases, followed by 2,356 in Choryasi, officials said.
