Gujarat on Sunday reported 850 fresh coronavirus positive cases, taking the count of infections to 2,41,845, the state health department said.

With seven more persons succumbing to the viral disease, including four fatalities in Ahmedabad, two in Surat two, and one in Vadodara, the total death toll in the state reached 4,282, it said.
A total of 920 patients were discharged in the day, taking the cumulative number of recoveries in the state to 2,27,128.

With 53,075 new tests, the total number of samples tested in Gujarat has gone up to 94,37,105, the department said.
Gujarat’s COVID-19 case recovery rate now stands at 93.91 percent.
The state has 10,435 active cases, it added.
Ahmedabad reported 178 new COVID-19 cases, Surat 158, Vadodara 135, and Rajkot 92.
Among other districts, Dahod recorded 30 cases, Kutch and Gandhinagar 26 cases each, Bhavnagar 23, Mehsana 22, Jamnagar 20, Panchmahal 16, Kheda 13, Morbi and Surendranagar 11, etc.
Gujarat COVID-19 figures are as follows: Positive cases 2,41,845, new cases 850, deaths 4,282, active cases 10,435 and people tested so far 94,37,105.
The Union Territory of Daman, Diu, Dadra, and Nagar Haveli reported one new COVID-19 case and one recovery, taking the cumulative caseload to 3,343, and recoveries to 3,332.
The UT has nine active cases, officials said, adding that the UT has seen two fatalities so far.
The number of new tests conducted in the UT on Sunday and the overall count of samples tested so far are not available.
2 returnees from UK test positive
A total of 12 out of the 1,720 passengers who reached Gujarat from the UK and other European countries between November 25 and December 23 have tested positive for coronavirus, the state government said on Sunday.
Samples of these patients — 11 of who tested positive between December 9 and 23 — have been sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune and the Gandhinagar-based Gujarat Biological Research Centre to determine whether they were carrying the mutated COVID-19 strain found in England, an official release said.
Results are expected in the next 8 to 10 days, it added.
Passengers reaching Gujarat from the UK between December 21 and 23 were subjected to RT-PCR test at various airports.
“Accordingly, the state health department started the process of testing passengers arriving from the UK and other European countries. Out of the 572 passengers who reached here between November 25 and December 8, one tested coronavirus positive.
“Additionally, out of the 1,148 passengers who returned from these countries between December 9 and December 23, 11 tested positive in RT-PCR testing. While four of them are from Ahmedabad, two each are from Vadodara, Anand, and Bharuch. One passenger was from Valsad,” it said.
These patients have been shifted to various hospitals for treatment, the release said.
Their samples have also been sent to the National Institute of Virology and the Gujarat Biological Research Centre for a “thorough investigation into whether they have any symptoms of the new coronavirus strain detected recently”.
Meanwhile, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani’s daughter, son-in-law and grandson who arrived here from London during this period underwent RT-PCR test, the release said, adding that they tested negative for coronavirus.
India banned flights to and from the UK from December 23 becaue of the emergence of a new variant of COVID-19 in that country.
Ahmedabad sees 178 cases, 4 deaths, 183 recoveries
Ahmedabad reported 178 COVID- 19 cases on Sunday, taking the tally in the district to 56,966, while four deaths increased the toll to 2,237, an official said.
So far, 51,781 people have recovered, including 183 on Sunday, comprising 175 from the city and eight from the rural parts of the district, he added.
“Of the new cases, the city accounted for 172, with its west zone now having 416 active cases, followed by north-west with 397 and south-west with 387,” he said.
The Ahmedabad Hospitals and Nursing Homes Association said 698 of 3,552 beds for COVID-19 patients in private hospitals in the city are occupied, with the occupancy rate being 19.6 percent.
“A total of 66 beds are occupied and 182 vacant in ICUs with ventilators. In ICUs without ventilators, 137 beds are occupied and 386 available. In isolation wards, 228 beds are occupied and 1,233 available,” the association said.
Surat district reports 158 new COVID-19 cases
The overall coronavirus caseload in Surat district now stands at 48,646, while the death toll rose to 1,132, an official release said.
With 133 new recoveries in Surat city in the day, the total number of people discharged so far has gone up to 34,804. The COVID-19 case recovery rate in Surat improved to 95.51 per cent, said the Surat Municipal Corporation.
The number of new tests conducted on Sunday and overall tests done so far in Surat district was not available.
