With the highest single-day spike of 1,175 coronavirus cases, Gujarat’s tally rose to 83,262 on Thursday, while 16 more patients succumbed to the infection, the state health department said.

Sixteen persons with the COVID-19 infection died across the state during the same period, taking the toll to 2,855, said the statement.
Of these 16, seven died in Surat district alone, followed by 4 in Ahmedabad, 2 in Rajkot, and one each in Gandhinagar, Mehsana, and Vadodara district, it said.
This highest single-day increase in fresh cases corresponds with the new benchmark in single-day testing, the department said.
The government said it conducted over 68,000 tests in the last 24 hours, up by 18,000 from last week.
With 68,581 tests in one-day, the per million average has now gone up to 1,055.09 test, the release said.
The total tests conducted so far in Gujarat stood at 15,47,210.
The release said as many as 1,123 persons also recovered and were discharged from hospitals in the last 24 hours, taking the number of such cases to 65,953.
The release said Gujarat has 14,454 active cases now. Among these, 86 are on ventilators and 14,368 are stable.
With an almost equal number of recoveries and daily fresh cases, active cases are hovering around the 14,000-mark since the last several weeks.
With 1,175 new cases, Gujarat was on the 16th spot in the country in terms of daily fresh cases, down two spots from last week’s ranking.
As many as 301 patients, the highest in Gujarat, recovered in Surat district, followed by 167 in Ahmedabad and 82 in Amreli.
Out of the total 1,175 new cases, 237 were from the Surat district alone. Ahmedabad was on the second spot with 172 new cases.

172 new cases found in Ahmedabad; 167 recover
Ahmedabad district recorded 172 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, taking its total count to 29,662 on Thursday, the state Health Department said.
Out of these new cases, 155 were reported from Ahmedabad city and 17 from rural parts of the district, said a release by the Health Department.

With the death of four COVID-19 patients, the toll in the district rose to 1,674, it said.
As many as 167 patients undergoing treatment at different hospitals in the district also recovered and were discharged in the last 24 hours, the release added.
These 167 recoveries include 146 from the city and 21 from different villages of Ahmedabad district.
Out of the total 2,855 COVID-19 deaths registered in Gujarat so far, as many as 1,674 were from Ahmedabad district alone.
Of the total 29,662 cases registered in Ahmedabad district so far, as many as 28,081 were from the city and the rest 1,581 from the rural parts of the district.

237 new COVID-19 cases found in Surat; 301 recover
Surat district of Gujarat recorded 237 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, taking its count to 18,457 on Thursday, the state Health Department said.
The number of cases in Surat was the highest for any district in the state for the day, said a release by the Health Department.
Also, seven patients succumbed to the infection, it said.

Meanwhile, as the situation slightly improved in terms of new cases emerging daily, the government has decided to resume state transport bus service for Surat city, said an official of Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation.
To contain the spread of the virus, all state transport buses were barred from entering Surat city around a week back.
Surat’s tally of 18,457 cases is second biggest after Ahmedabad, where 29,662 persons have been found infected so far.
Out of these 237 new cases, 163 were from Surat city while 74 cases were from rural parts of the district, the release said.
While four persons from the city died in the last 24 hours, three deaths were reported from villages, taking the toll to 761 in the district.
A total of 301 persons, the highest in Gujarat on Thursday, also recovered, taking the total discharges to 14,981, the release said.
