With its highest single-day rise of 965 new coronavirus positive cases, Gujarat’s tally went up to 48,441 on Sunday, the state health department said.
The death of 20 patients during the day pushed the toll in the state to 2,147, it said.

A total of 877 patients were discharged on Sunday, which took the number of recovered persons to 34,882, it said.
The state has now 11,412 active cases, of which the condition of 69 patients is critical, it said.

The case count in Surat crossed the 10,000-mark with 285 new cases reported on Sunday, the highest in the state for the day. The tally is now 10,258.
Ahmedabad reported 212 new cases, the second-highest in the state, taking its total to 24,375.

Vadodara reported 79 new cases, Rajot 49, Bhavnagar 35, Gandhinagar 30, Mehsana 22, Banaskantha 21, Dahod and Kutch 19 each, Bharuch 18, Panchmahal 16, Surendranagar and Junagadh 15 each, Patan and Valsad 14 each, Amreli 13, Kheda and Tapi 12 each, among others.
Of the 20 fatalities on Sunday, Surat reported the highest at nine, followed by Ahmedabad at six, Dahod two, and Bhavnagar, Gir Somnath and Jamnagar one each.
With this, Ahmedabad’s death toll rose to 1,547, and that of Surat to 435.
In terms of recoveries, Surat reported the highest on Sunday at 207, taking its total of such patients to 6,522.
In Ahmedabad, 167 patients were discharged, and 161 in Bhavnagar, the department said in a release.
The number of recovered patients in Ahmedabad has gone up to 19,008.
Gujarat’s COVID-19 figures are as follows: Positive cases 48,441, new cases 965, deaths 2,147, discharged 34,882, active cases 11,412 and people tested so far 5,36,620.
Surat dist case count crosses 10,000-mark
Surat in Gujarat reported 285 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, highest for any district in the state for the day, which pushed its tally beyond the 10,000- mark, the health department said.
The district’s case count now stands at 10,258, it said.
With nine deaths, the district’s COVID-19 fatality count was also the highest in the state on Sunday. With this, its number of victims has now gone up to 435.
Surat city reported 206 new cases, while rural areas in the district recorded 79.
Six of the nine deaths were reported from the city, and three from the district, the health department said in a release.
With 207 patients getting discharged during the day, the tally of recovered patients in the district rose to 6,315.
Among those discharged on Sunday was a 29-year-old woman, who recovered from the infection after nearly a month-and-a-half as she also suffered from TB, local health officials said.
She had to be kept in the ICU for a week after being admitted to the COVID-19 ward of the civil hospital on May 7, they said.
The SMIMER Hospital of Surat Municipal Corporation has taken a new initiative to offer “psycho-social health cure treatment” to the COVID-19 patients admitted there.
As part of this, the authorities have decided to connect the patients to their relatives through video calls once a day so that they know about their well-being, officials said.
This is a part of the “psycho-social health cure treatment” adopted by the hospital authority to cheer up the patients and make them mentally strong by creating a positive atmosphere for them, they said.

Ahmedabad’s tally up by 212 to 24,375; 6 more dead
The number of coronavirus positive cases in Ahmedabad district mounted to 24,375 with the addition of 212 patients on Sunday, the state health department said.
The fatality count in the district rose to 1,547 as the virus claimed six more lives, it said.

As many as 167 patients were discharged in the district on Sunday, which pushed the tally of recovered patients to 19,008.
The number of single-day cases in the district crossed the 200-mark after a gap of over two weeks, with Ahmedabad city reporting 186 cases and rural parts 26 new cases Sunday.
There are now 203 micro-containment areas in Ahmedabad city, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) said.

According to the civic body, the city’s recovery rate has improved to 79.7 percent and the fatality rate is 6.5 percent.
The west zone of the city remains the worst-affected with 19.2 per cent of total active cases at 612, followed by the north-west zone at 16.4 per cent of active cases at 524, the AMC said.
