For the first time, Gujarat on Friday recorded a spike of more than 1,200 new coronavirus cases in 24 hours, the state health department said.

With the highest single-day spike of 1,204, the caseload in the state rose to 84,466.
Fourteen persons with COVID-19 infection died across the state, taking the death toll to 2,869.
Five died in Surat district, followed by three in Ahmedabad, two in Vadodara and one each in Anand, Bhavnagar, Panchmahal, and Rajkot districts.
Notably, over 72,000 coronavirus tests were conducted in 24 hours, which was also a record.
With 72,857 tests conducted in one-day, over 4,000 more than yesterday, the per million average went up to 1,120.87 tests, the health department release said.
1,324 patients, the highest so far, were discharged in the last 24 hours, taking the total of recovered cases in the state to 67,277.
With this, Gujarat”s patient recovery rate has now gone up to 80 percent.
There are 14,320 active cases, 89 of them on the ventilator, the health department said.
With 1,204 new cases on Friday, Gujarat was on the 15th spot in the country in terms of the daily spike.
340 patients, the highest in Gujarat, recovered in Surat district on Friday, followed by 167 in Ahmedabad and 308 in Jamnagar.
Of 1,204 new cases, 251 cases were from Surat district alone. Ahmedabad was in the second spot with 179 new cases.

179 new cases in Ahmedabad; three die, 167 recover
Ahmedabad reported 179 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, taking the infection count in the district to 29,841 on Friday, the health department said.
Of these new cases, 156 were from Ahmedabad city and 23 from other parts of the district, it said in a statement.
With the death of three COVID-19 patients during this period, the fatality count in the district reached 1,677, it added.
As many as 167 patients undergoing treatment at different hospitals in the district recovered from the infection and given the discharge in the last 24 hours, it said.
Of the total number of persons who recovered on Friday, 156 were from the city and 11 from different villages in the district, it said.
Of the total 2,869 COVID-19 deaths registered in Gujarat so far, as many as 1,677 were from Ahmedabad district alone and 1,619 of them were from the city.
Out of the total 29,841 cases registered in Ahmedabad district so far, as many as 28,237 were from the city.

Surat reports 251 new cases; five die, 340 recover
The COVID-19 tally in Surat went up to 18,708 after 251 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours, the government said on Friday.
Surat’s tally is the second-highest in the state after Ahmedabad, where 29,841 people have tested positive so far.
The spike in the number of cases in Surat was the highest for any district in the state on Friday, the government said in a release.
Of the 251 new cases, 169 were from Surat city and 82 others from rural parts of the district, it said.
While three persons from the city died in the last 24 hours, two deaths were reported from the villages, taking the fatality count in the district to 766.
A total of 340 people, highest in Gujarat on Friday, recovered from the infection and were given the discharge in the last 24 hours, which pushed the count of recoveries to 15,321, the release said.
