Twelve more active COVID-19 cases have been reported while two patients died of the infection here in the last 24 hours, a bulletin said on Thursday.

Of the 12, nine were admitted to the Indira Gandhi Government Medical college hospital, one to JIPMER and two to the government General hospital in Mahe, an enclave of Puducherry in Kerala, the bulletin said. Up till now, the total number of COVID-19 cases were 157 – active cases (88); 67 were discharged and two deaths, it said.

Health Minister Malladi Krishna Rao told reporters that 10 to 12 fresh cases were being reported everday. If this trend continued, the Union Territory would see an alarming number of cases during this month and the next, he said.

Director of Health and Family Welfare Services S Mohan Kumar said the health workers, who had handled the two bodies in the hospital, were screened and all of them tested negative.

He added that the government would decide the next course of action to protect the people from the infection, as the current incidence of COVID-19 was causing serious concern.
