Gujarat on Saturday recorded its highest single-day spike of 1,212 new COVID-19 cases, taking the total count of infections to 85,678, state health department said.
The number of fatalities rose by 14, including six in Surat, which is the highest in the state, to 2,883, it said.

As against 1,212 new cases, 980 patients were discharged in the day, taking the number of recoveries to 68,257, the department said, adding that the recovery rate has reached 80 per cent.
At 238, Surat reported the highest number of cases in one day, followed by 179 cases in Ahmedabad.
Besides six fatalities in Surat, three deaths occurred in Ahmedabad and two in Junagadh while Patan, Kutch, and Vadodara reported one death each, the department said in a release.

Elsewhere, Vadodara reported 122 new cases, Rajkot 99, Jamnagar 80, Amreli 67, Bhavnagar 58, Bharuch, and Junagadh 32 each, Mehsana 26, Kutch 24, Gir Somnath 18, Anand and Banaskantha 16 each, etc.
At 75,258, the highest number of samples were tested in the last 24 hours, which comes at 1,157.82 tests per day per million population, it said.
A total 16,95,325 samples have been tested so far in the state.
The number of active cases in the state reached 14,538, out of which 85 people are in a critical condition and on ventilator support, the release said.
Currently, 4,69,177 people remained quarantined in various districts in the state, the department said.
Gujarat’s COVID-19 figures are as follows: Positive cases 85,678, new cases 1,212, deaths 2,883, discharged 68,257, active cases 14,538 and people tested so far 16,95,325.
238 new cases in Surat district, six deaths
Surat reported 238 new coronavirus cases on Saturday, the highest in Gujarat, which took the district’s case tally to 18,946, the state health department said.
The number of COVID-19 deaths in the district rose to 772 with six fatalities on Saturday, also the highest in the state.
Three deaths each were reported in the city and rural parts of the district, the department said in its release.
Surat also reported the highest daily recovery in the state with 308 patients being discharged from hospitals.
It took the total number of recovered cases in the district to 15,629.
Surat city reported 166 new cases while the rural parts reported 72 new cases on Saturday.
According to the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), the city’s north zone accounts for the highest 19.7 percent of confirmed cases, followed by the west zone at 13.8 and south-west zone at 13.1 percent.
The civic body said it has so far surveyed 7,67,050 people in areas where coronavirus cases were reported.
Also, a total of 27,543 people are quarantined in the city.

Ahmedabad case tally crosses 30,000-mark; three die
The COVID-19 case tally in Ahmedabad district crossed the 30,000-mark and rose to 30,020 on Saturday with the addition of 179 new cases, Gujarat health department said.
With three more patients succumbing to the infection, the toll went up to 1,680, it said.
A total of 176 patients were discharged in the day, including 157 in Ahmedabad city and 19 in rural areas, taking the number of recoveries to 24,932, the department said in a release.
Of the 179 new COVID-19 cases, Ahmedabad city added 157 patients while 22 cases were reported from rural parts of the district, it said.
All three deaths occurred in the city municipal corporation limits.
Ahmedabad has not reported more than four fatalities in the day since August 9. The number of daily deaths fell to single digits in the first week of July.
With 1,480 patients getting discharged so far, the recovery rate in rural Ahmedabad has improved to 91 percent, the release said.
