Puducherry reported six new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday pushing up the total number of infections in the union territory to 40.
A nine-year old boy from neighbouring Mannadipet village was admitted to the Indira Gandhi Government Medical college hospital on Wednesday night for treatment of coronavirus.
Director of Health and Family Welfare services S Mohan Kumar said that the boy was a contact tracing case and his father was already under treatment for the infection in the hospital.
With the admission of the boy the total number of positive cases of infection rose to 40, he said.
Earlier in the day, five new cases, all hailing from the peripheral pockets of the town, were reported.
Earlier in the day, the Health Minister Malladi Krishna Rao expressing fear over the constant rise in cases over the last 10 days.
“If Puducherry keeps reporting a high number of cases the administration would have to get one more hospital ready to accommodate the patients,” he told reporters.
Presently, the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College hospital designated as a coronavirus hospital by the ICMR has 700 beds, he noted.
Rao further said four fresh cases, all hailing from neighbouring Tamil Nadu, had been admitted to JIPMER and these patients are enlisted under TN category.
All the new cases now admitted to the hospital in Puducherry and to JIPMER were found to have contracted the disease through contact with the patients,who were their kith and kin and are already under treatment, the minister said.
