NEW DELHI, MARCH 13
The Delhi Assembly has passed a resolution against the National Population Register (NPR) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) on Friday.
At the one-day special session, which was held to discuss the two issues, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal requested the Centre to withdraw them.
While moving the resolution, Kejriwal said “Me, my wife, my entire cabinet don’t have birth certificates to prove citizenship. Will we be sent to detention centres?” he asked.
Kejriwal challenged Union ministers to show whether they had birth certificates issued by the government.
In the Assembly, Kejriwal asked the MLAs to raise their hands if they had birth certificates, following which only nine legislators in the 70-member House raised their hands.
“Sixty-one members of the House do not have birth certificates,” he said. “Will they be sent to detention centres?” Kejriwal asked.
Earlier, Bihar government headed by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar brought a resolution against the NRC in the Legislative Assembly which was passed unanimously by the House last month.
The assembly also passed a resolution to implement the NPR in its 2010 form, with an amendment.
The states of Kerala, Punjab, West Bengal and Rajasthan have passed resolutions against the controversial CAA. While Punjab and Rajasthan are ruled by the Congress, Kerala and West Bengal have governments of Left Front and Trinamool Congress, respectively.
