MUMBAI, AUGUST 4
Dharavi Redevelopment Project Pvt Ltd (DRPPL), the joint venture between the government of Maharashtra and the Adani group, got a shot in the arm for redevelopment of Asia’s biggest slum in Mumbai, sources said here on Sunday.
A newly formed association of residents of Dharavi and its vicinity has lent its support to ongoing state government-led survey of informal tenements, a precursor to the USD 3-billion project by the Adani group that promises to transform lives of an estimated one million residents. This project is scheduled to be completed in seven years.
“We request the survey be conducted at the earliest possible time to ensure that the redevelopment can move forward without further delays,” Citizen and Society Development Welfare, a body of Dharavi residents wrote to SVR Srinivas, CEO Dharavi Redevelopment Project/Slum Rehabilitation Authority (DRP/SRA), of government of Maharashtra, on July 30.
Representatives of Citizen and Society Development Welfare, who have given the slogan of ‘Dharavi Banao Andolan,’ met Srinivas and submitted a memorandum seeking expedition of the survey being conducted in Dharavi.
From the horse’s mouth
“My team and I are aware that the design and implementation of the Dharavi project are challenges monumental in both scale and dimensions. We are also aware that the project will test our resilience, our capability and our execution skills to their limits. Over the years, the Adani Group has developed a solution- oriented culture backed by a highly motivated, experienced and energetic team. I am confident that, with the support of all stakeholders, we shall create history and make Dharavi, Mumbai and India proud,” said Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani.
“The new Dharavi will reflect the quintessential character of Mumbai – the spirit, grit, unity in diversity, colour and determination – without losing the timeless essence of the old Dharavi. What their homes do not have now, we will provide – gas, water, electricity, sanitation and drainage, healthcare and recreational facilities, and open spaces – and they will also have access to a world-class hospital and a school, added Gautam Adani.
